It was a srrtaller, but. still happy and enthusiastic group of riding.enthusiasts that met last Tuesday evening for the second time at Hugh Sinnamn's abode, R. Wingham, for the regular meet* of the Riders' Roost -Sad- die "club. PreSident Carolyn Taylor got things 'rolling' with welcome to . all, thanks to the host, followed by a call for any good news from the.tlub members. Three items. were reported, unfortunately two= . thirds bad - Pat Aalders won a beautiful horse's halter. at the • March 27 Seminar in Guelph (lucky gal!) but Doug' Jansen re- ported that his. Candy chipped a chunk of bode off her hip, and • Hugh reported that Timmy had a bad cold. Comments followed re the Horse Seminar 'held at Guelph. University on March 27, attend- ed by' some clubbers. All who attended registered appreciation for what was presented to them. Next Ken Taylor showed colour- ed slides taken at Quarterama 73 in Toronto. Our work period was taken up, by the host's presentation, Orig- in and Development of the Horse. It' was a long story but club members got a chance to juggle such terms as "hyracoth7 f erium",, "eohippus".and "Equus Przewalski". Perphas two interesting points that were brought out concerned the fact .that (1) mOdern horse's distant ancestors were North Americans who disappeared from this contin- ent in the dim past to return as modern horse in 1519 when 16 ArKlalusians and Barbs were brought to Mexico by the Spanish adventurer Cortez. Captain Helm informed the girls that all those who had. tried the test for the Fire Brigade. Badge had passed. Because of the band concert next week,. Guides will meet Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. • Instead of Patrol Corners Mafy Olen Havens taught, the girls the art of petal dipping. Each girl had a turn at. making petals of a flower. Campfire was led by Susan Thompson. The meeting closed with Ves- pers and Taps. . ..At the Guide meeting held on March 29th badges were presented as, follows: Challenge Badge to' Lorna Boyle; Collector's Badge to Barb Wisser and Baker's Badge to Barb Cameron. English words referring to horses' and horsemanship also have a close connection with nobility, courtley manners, and gentle- manly behaviour (the- latter two ' sound pretty good still). Even so, these words have as their root' not "equus:= hOrse" but "caballus: nag", Following .the spiel on "Origins" Carolyn then gave a pep talk which we hope reaches the ears .of all members. A very active season is being planned, includ- ing a trail ride last Sunday in April, 'as well as an excursion by bus to Bert Bean's Arena at Carlow on May 1st where we will all learn something about show- manship. . To be as big, even bigger and better than in 72,' our Club needs the active support and interest of all members, so let's all get • behind it and 'realize our fondest hopes for the busy season of rides and shows fast coming upl. Lisa Gunby announced that she had requested pen pals by sending ' her name to Junior Horsemen's Magazine. She has received 60 replies. All boys? I wonder. The host won the lucky draw. KINTAIL ON WASHINGTbN TOUR Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Dren- nan left on Friday on a conduct- ed bus tour to Washington, D.C. John MacKenzie drove the school bus in Doug Drennan's absence. Miss Shirley Robb of Centralia College was at home for the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Robb, Miss Margaret Simpson and Glen Ferguson frOm Guelph visit 7 ,ed with Mr. and Mrs. Robert . Simpson over the Week end. Miss Cathy Simpson jc4ned a bus load to attend a hockey. match at Essex, near Windsor, Tuesday of last.week. • Sunday School is to start again next Sunday on April 15th, until December, in Ashfield Presbyter- ian Church. A letter and souvenir was received this week by Mr. and Mrs. 'Duncan' Simpson from Ray- mond Dalton, who is in Ireland.. Ray is travelling with his nephew • Moigan O'Connor of Pickering., They were in Dublin at tithe of writing and enjoying their trip very much. Paul Frayne v'vas at the home of Mr. and Mn.i Eugene Fraype for the week end. Paul attends Waterloo University: OPEN HOUSE Open House was•held Tuesday evening in North Ashfield School. Pioneer Day was held Wednesday with a display of pion• eer articles and stories. BROWNIE NEWS • The Brownies opened their meeting on Tuesday, April 3rd by playing several skipping games. We then had Bro'Wnie Ring — with Judy 'Hunter as Fairy Queen. The Sixers collected Fairy Gold and Brown Owl did inspection. Brownie Ring "was closed with Brownie Prayer. At Pow Wow we sang Happy Birthday to Linda Wisser. Brown Owl went over the requirements of the Writer Badge and the Brownies that 'want to be tested for it will try the test on April 17th. Marian Raynard passed her test for the Skater Badge on'Saturday, March 31st. Shirley'Loree read her bulb diary to the Pack. During work period . Brown Owl worked with the Gold- en Hand .Brownies and explained some of the tests the Brownies must try for their Golden Hand. Snowy Owl was testing for the AIRCRAFT Finger Code with Brenda Phillips and Suzanne Kirkland passing this test. The Golden Bar Brownies were with Tawny Owl and they did skipping games "Double Dutch" and "Tramp". Judy Hunter, Shirley Loree, Linda .PRAYING NEEDS CALL NOW FOR.
