Midgets Lose 3-2 In First Game Of Finals In the first game of the W.O. A. A finals played, in Lucknow on Monday night, the local Midget , hockey° team went down to' defeat , losing to' Mildmay 3-2. Mildmay outplayed Lucknow as the boys simply didn't put ally effort into the game. The two goals scored by Lucknow were off the stick of Ian Montgornery from DaveMep= herd and Kevin Murray, unassist- ed. The attendance at'the game was shocking for a playoff game that gives the winner 'of the series the trophy for the W.O.A.A.' Mid- get D Championship, something that does carry some honour for the town that wins it.. Seemingly the fans forget that the Midget players kept the Juveniles in the 0.M.H.A. playoffs on the week- end. A glance at the scoring W.O.A.A. Juveniles Score Winning Goal Saturday With 1 Second Left To Play In Game, Tie Series With Cottam 1 - 1, With 1 Tie The last two days in' March provided some real thrilling hockey action as the Lucknow Juv- enile hockey team battled it out with Cottam on Friday and Satur- day nights in the Lucknow arena. Lucktiow lost the "first game in I Essex by. a score of 5-4'. With $ ' their backs against the wall, in the best-of-three semi final series for the Ontario Minor Hock- ey Association Juvenile "p" semi- finals, they were host to Cottam on Friday night. ' • The arena was well filled for the match which saw a 7-7 tie after 10 minutes overtime. Marksmen for Lucknow. were Jim Murray with three goals, Kevin Murray with two and singles going to Ian Montgomery and Mark Chishohn. Assists went to Ian Montgomery 4, Stewart'Mann arid Greg HamiltOn, 3 each and, Wayne Pritchard. Lucknow Was in the lead 3- at the end of the first; it was a q‘ 4-4 tie at the end of the secol 4 ) 6-6 tie at the end of the third and each team scored once in the • overtime 10 minute period. SATURDAY A. DANDY The Cottam team stayed over- night in Wingham and the Satur- • day night game commenced at 8 p.m. Once again it was 'a thriller with the arena filled with fans, a good number of Which -were present from the Cottam area. With Cottam having a win' and a tie under their belt, another tie game would have been en-. ough' to take the series. The game was Lucknow.'s at the first taking a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period on goals by Ian Montgomery Unassisted, Jim Murray, from Mark Chisholm and Ian Montgomery from Cliff Mann. Cottam put 'themselves right back in the game in the second period scoring three goals with- out an answer from Lucknow. In the third, Luckno4popened the scoring on a goal by Jim Murray from Bob McGillivray. • Cottam scored again to tie the score at 4-4.with about 5 .min- utes to play in the game. The game went into"10 minut- Second row, Danny LOndry, Ron Johnson, Mike McDonagh, Kevin Kilpatrick, Steve. Hamilton, Dav- id Errington, Kerr Ritchie, Torn es overtime. Cottam opened the.scoring, about the 4 minute mark. Luck- now tied the game at 5-5 with about 4 minutes left in the . game, on a goal' by Dale Hunter , from Dave Black. ' However, Lucknow needed a win, a tie would have 'given Cot- tann:the series, and at 9.59, of the overtime period, Ian Mont- gomery fired the puck into the net to give Lucknow a 6-5 'vic- tory. Lucknow's goal tender David Cleland had been out, of the net for close to a minute and Lucknow tied up the play in the Cottam end, doing everything but put the puck in the net, Until, with one second left in the game, Lucknow wrapped it. up. A diSpute immediately was created with Cottam claiming that' the time had lapsed' and that the period was over when the goal was .saored. After a confer- ence between team officials, re ferees and 'time keeper, the goal was declared as being scored with one second to play. The Cottam team was naturally emotionally charged and upset at the turn of events•in the last sec- ond., and with the exception of a couple of their players, who did a bit of stick swinging and board banging., the team acted like gentlemen considering that a victory had. been snatched from them with one second to play, 9.59 of the overtime. Ifanyone had reason to be up- set by the incident, it was Cot- tam, but ,much to the disgrace of this community, a few local clowns, who had no business being on the ice, Charged onto the ice 'and 'attempted to create a riot-by their abuSiveness'and eagerness to fight anyone and everyone. What might have been a nasty end to a real hockey game, was nipped, fortunately , .in time. Thanks to the actions of a few, Lueknow's image has been tarnish. ed in the eyes of Cottam fans, and players, and it is uhfortunate be- cause theLticknoW team had no part in this miserable display. The &aiding game was sched- tiled for Tuesday night back in Essex and the results will be too late for this week's paper.
