Midgets Lose
3-2 In First
Game Of Finals
In the first game of the W.O.
A. A finals played, in Lucknow on
Monday night, the local Midget ,
hockey° team went down to' defeat ,
losing to' Mildmay 3-2. Mildmay
outplayed Lucknow as the boys
simply didn't put ally effort into
the game. The two goals scored
by Lucknow were off the stick of
Ian Montgornery from DaveMep=
herd and Kevin Murray, unassist-
ed.
The attendance at'the game
was shocking for a playoff game
that gives the winner 'of the series
the trophy for the W.O.A.A.' Mid-
get D Championship, something
that does carry some honour for
the town that wins it.. Seemingly
the fans forget that the Midget
players kept the Juveniles in the
0.M.H.A. playoffs on the week-
end. A glance at the scoring

With 1 Second Left To Play In Game,
Tie Series With Cottam 1 - 1, With 1 Tie
The last two days in' March
provided some real thrilling
hockey action as the Lucknow Juv-
enile hockey team battled it out
with Cottam on Friday and Satur-
day nights in the Lucknow arena.
Lucktiow lost the "first game in
I Essex by. a score of 5-4'. With $ ' their backs against the wall, in
the best-of-three semi final
series for the Ontario Minor Hock-
ey Association Juvenile "p" semi-
finals, they were host to Cottam
on Friday night. ' •
The arena was well filled for
the match which saw a 7-7 tie
after 10 minutes overtime.
Marksmen for Lucknow. were
Jim Murray with three goals,
Kevin Murray with two and singles
going to Ian Montgomery and
Mark Chishohn. Assists went to
Ian Montgomery 4, Stewart'Mann
arid Greg HamiltOn, 3 each and,

Lucknow Was in the lead 3-
at the end of the first; it was a q‘
4-4 tie at the end of the secol 4 )
6-6 tie at the end of the third and
each team scored once in the •
overtime 10 minute period.
SATURDAY A. DANDY
The Cottam team stayed over-
night in Wingham and the Satur- •
day night game commenced at
8 p.m.
Once again it was 'a thriller
with the arena filled with fans,
a good number of Which -were
present from the Cottam area.
With Cottam having a win' and
a tie under their belt, another
tie game would have been en-.
ough' to take the series.
The game was Lucknow.'s at
the first taking a 3-0 lead at the
end of the first period on goals
by Ian Montgomery Unassisted,
Jim Murray, from Mark Chisholm
and Ian Montgomery from Cliff
Mann.
Cottam put 'themselves right
back in the game in the second
period scoring three goals with-
out an answer from Lucknow.
In the third, Luckno4popened
the scoring on a goal by Jim
Murray from Bob McGillivray. •
Cottam scored again to tie the
score at 4-4.with about 5 .min-
utes to play in the game.
The game went into"10 minut-

Cottam opened the.scoring,
about the 4 minute mark. Luck-
now tied the game at 5-5 with
about 4 minutes left in the .
game, on a goal' by Dale Hunter ,
from Dave Black. '
However, Lucknow needed a
win, a tie would have 'given Cot-
tann:the series, and at 9.59, of
the overtime period, Ian Mont-
gomery fired the puck into the
net to give Lucknow a 6-5 'vic-
tory.
Lucknow's goal tender David
Cleland had been out, of the net
for close to a minute and Lucknow
tied up the play in the Cottam
end, doing everything but put the
puck in the net, Until, with one
second left in the game, Lucknow
wrapped it. up.
A diSpute immediately was
created with Cottam claiming
that' the time had lapsed' and
that the period was over when the
goal was .saored. After a confer-
ence between team officials, re
ferees and 'time keeper, the goal
was declared as being scored with
one second to play.
The Cottam team was naturally
emotionally charged and upset at
the turn of events•in the last sec-
ond., and with the exception of a
couple of their players, who did a
bit of stick swinging and board
banging., the team acted like
gentlemen considering that a
victory had. been snatched from
them with one second to play,
9.59 of the overtime.
Ifanyone had reason to be up-
set by the incident, it was Cot-
tam, but ,much to the disgrace
of this community, a few local
clowns, who had no business being
on the ice, Charged onto the ice
'and 'attempted to create a riot-by
their abuSiveness'and eagerness
to fight anyone and everyone.
What might have been a nasty
end to a real hockey game, was
nipped, fortunately , .in time.
Thanks to the actions of a few,
Lueknow's image has been tarnish.
ed in the eyes of Cottam fans, and
players, and it is uhfortunate be-
cause theLticknoW team had no
part in this miserable display.
The &aiding game was sched-
tiled for Tuesday night back in
Essex and the results will be too
late for this week's paper.
