The Lucknow Sentinel, 1973-03-07, Page 2That's a pretty alarming figure when one considers that
it is our money they are• stealing.
The surprising part of this is not the 'fact that there •was
an alarming 'thigh abuse of the insurance benefits. Many 'of us
have known this •for years. •
• The surprising part is that it took a special investigation,
aided by an unfavourable election, to do what should • be done
by the UneMploymed Insurance CommisSion as a routine part
° of their job.
When officials release the. monthly percentages' of un-
employed in Canada, it would be interesting to get a further per-
centage breakdown of those who want work • and those who
won't work.

WEDNESDAY, MAORI
A "crackdown" by Ottawa has revealed that large num-
bers of Canadians are abusing the unemployment insurance
commission.
"Abusing" is the word we use for the proper description,
"cheating" when we talk about unemployment insurance.
It seems 'that the government has suddenly realized that
large numbers of peoPle receive unemployment insurance when
they are actually not looking for work, nor have any intention
of working.
People in this area have been aware of the unemployment
insurance "joke" for 'many 'years, as have most 'hard working
employees and employers across, the country.
But it took the recent election to jolt the remaining mem-
bers of the govermnent into doing something about it.
The unemployment insurance fiasco, was one of the prime
issues in the recent election. The people spoke loudly at this
time and it's appal", that some of the messages struck home.
A senior spokesman for the unemployment insurance com-
mission is reported to have told a Toronto newspaper that
20,000 of 28,000 beneficiaries investigated in the. Toronto and
Hamilton area have been, or probably will be, cut off the
benefits of •weekly unemployment insurance cheques.
