Host TV Special On
Venereal Disease
One of the major health prob-_
lems of our time is venereal dis-
ease, which has now reached'
epidemic proportions in North
'America.
Young people, especially, are
its chief victims in Western Soc-
iety, with millions being added
to their ranks each year.
To help combat' the spread of •
this scourge of the young, CBC-T-V
is presenting in prime time , to
reach as wide an audience as
pOssibl . the widely-acclaimed
special prograty VD Blues , 'hosted
by Diet< Cavett. It' was shown on
public television in the U.S. last
October: •
It.will be telecast on the CB0-
TV network Wednesday, Febtuary
28 at 8,00 p.m. as a 90-minute
special. -- the first hdur featuring
Dick Cavett and such performers
as: Severn Darden, James Coco,
and' Arlo Guthrie; followed by a
30-minute discussion among youn
people .and professional people' in
the CBC studio in Toronto.
Says Knowlton Nash, Director
of TV Information Programs,
•"This 'is one of the most import-
ant•.t•elevision programs produced
in years. Recent statistics have
shown a phenomenal •
increase in venereal disease in
Canada, and to combat this near-
epidemic , new ways muSt,be
found to reach young people be-
lore they become victims.•
"VD Blues and thediscussiou
to follow are being brought 'to
Canadians at' an early evening
?rime -time period 'as public
service because of the importance
of the problems and because the
program has been hailed by med-
ical experts and social scientists
as perhaps the most effective way
yet devised to reach today's.
youngsters."
"This is an entertainment show,
not 'a documentary program ,".
says Dick Cavett. "It is a show
young folks would want .to watch,
'not a program they'd be told, to
watch."
The Canadian Qroup, to be
introduced at the beginning of the
prograin, will watch Dick CaVett
and his guests, explain the • fa.cts
about venereal 'disease (through
songs, comedy sketches, and

essentially a 'rap` session about • •
the problem as it relates to Can-
ada.
"It won't be.a conventional ,
panel-discussion with experts on
one side and young people on the
other," says produder Don Elder.
VD is everyone's problem. We
want all Canadians to recognize •
it, and discuss it openly."
