Bruce Farm Report JUGGLING 'PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTS Urea has for a number of., years been a ,major - constituent of beef supplements. However, many people are to-day switch- ing to supplements with urea for dairy cattle because of the high ' price of soybean meal and other- plant sources of protein. A sup- plement with urea should be in- troduced gradually and if it is ,to replace soybean meal as the sole source of protein it should be done over a three 'to four week period. The bacteria in the rumen of the animal cannot cope with a sudden change "to urea from plant protein and a drop in milk pro- duction will result if •the change is' not gradual. Urea needs energy to be converted to protein, and therefore if mixed grain is now being fed it would 'be best to add "some corn or extra barley to the ration. TRACE MINERALS These are rarely a problem in cattle or swine rations except for possibly selenium in swine rations. However, if it' is felt that any mineral shortage is, causing a problem then the feed can' be tested for any particular mineral. Feed can be tested for protein or energy also.
