WINTERICILL.,
A forage stand which was good
last fall may be a poor stand by
a* sizing becaklse of winterkill.,
There are three basic causes of
winterkill — freezing, heaving
and ice sheets, Although freez-
fog is considered as a case of I,
the weather being too cold for the
plants, there are factors which
affect it For instance orchard
grass is less tolerant to cold than
timothy or bromegiass. Alfalfa
varies in winter-hardiness depend-
ing on variety — Vernal has bet-
ter hardiness than'Saranac. An- •
other factor is that plants "hard-
en" with cool weather in the' fall.
Harvesting practices, such as not
cutting alfalfa'in September, aid
the build up of food reserves
which helps the hardening prci-
cess. ° •
Rapid :changes in temperatures
often kill more plants than low
temperature itself. A, few warm
days- in spring encourage plant '
growth. Under these conditions al-
falfa will lose its hardness and is
then, susceptible to cold if the
temperature drops.
° Proper soil fertility aids in re-
ducing'winter injury. Weak,
starved plants are much more
susceptible to injury than healthy
ones.
Heaving .is a moving of the
plants from their normal position
in the soil. It is not uncommon to
find alfalfa plants in the spring
with 1 - 2 inches of root showing.
On the other hand grasses which
have fibrous roots are 'generally
heaved less than legumes which
have:Uproots. Thus one way to
reduce heaving is to use a grass
