Surveys have shown that 50%
of all COWS are infected with an
average of two infected quarters
per cow. Cows 'in this condition
are quite .detrimental to your
=herd.---The-infected_quarter„pro-
vides a ready 'supply of bacteria
for a more acute infection of the
-host animal or to infect other
herdmates. The milk production
of infected/ animals is reduced
significantly and the production
of your whole herd is threatened.
This condition also potentially en-
dangers the health of the public
who are consuming YOUR milk
r-rnilk-riroducts.
There are several ways in
which you can lose money to this
culprit. The first, is a substanial
with excessively high Gel counts
of 50 + could lose as much as
50% of their productive capabil-
ities:
If carelessness allows an infect-
--ion-to.--take-hold in a preciously
herd, a 10% drop in pro-
duction, and income, is quite pos-
sible. If the infection becomes
serious and is treated, you are,
that cow for at least three days,
plus the cost of the treatment
used. Infected udders tend to de-
terioratee.arlier in life, leading-
to a shorter productive span . for
the animal in question. You must
then__consider_the_tott of replac-
ing that animal in the 'milking
line. These factors all add up.
How do you really know how
much production you are losing,
or how unhealthy the cows in
your herd_ are?. You cannot know
hi the production levels of your -
dividual cows unless you are on
some type of weighing program
such as R.O.P. or D.H.I.A. Sim
ilarly, I challenge anybody to
know the instance of ma.stitas in
his herd, unless he is , on a rout-
ine quarter sampling schedule.
This boils down to taking an in-
ventory of the quaters at definite
kntervals. This can be done sun
ply by the producer him-Sel f uting
a 'California Test Paddle.
You as , producers and farm
managers can decide,'after look-
ing again atthe trendrshown

or not you have cause for. con-
