BRIDAL SHOWER
On Saturday evening Mrs. Don
Morrison and Mrs. Joyce Shewan
held a bridal shower at the home
of Mrs. Jack Morrison for Ethel
Darling bride-to-be. Around
20 gathered '1:r 8.30 and all were
introduced by each giving their
name. After this a contest was
conducted, naming the most
articles shown on plates. Mrs.
Gertie Tiffin won this contest.
The next contest was several • gifts were wrapped and
was given to the bride whose lucky
number, was 5. Then the dice
was passed to each and whenever
anyone turned out a 5 they took a
sift until all gifts were taken.
Each opened and displayed their
gift.' Then whenever anyone turn-
ed, up. a 5 if someone had a gift

week. Then for a send off party
all got together at Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Broome's home in the Trailer
Park in Bluevale on. Sunday for a
picnic supper. Present were Mr.
and Mrs.. Wm. Broome and Billy,
Wingham; Mr. and Mrs,. Reg.
Broome, Belfast; Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Broome , Lucicnow; Mr. and
'Mrs. Bob Broome and family,
Lucknow; Mr. and Mrs. Ken

called on the family earlier in
the day.

This was Mr. Broome'S first visit
to, Canada. Mrs. Broome had visit..
ed here about four years ago.

In a newspaper from Weatern
Canada called "Footnotes and
News", July 12, 1972, there was
a picture of a former native of
these parts Mrs. Donald
Douglas and an accompanying
article describing her life long
community. contributions,
Mr. and Mrs, Donald
Douglas, who now live retired in
Granum Alberta, were back
home to Ontario this summer.
In Ripley they visited with Mr.
and Mrs. Frank. Fair. Mrs.
Elizabeth Fair attended the
Ripley Continuation school at
the same time as Mrs. Helen
Douglas and they have been
friends since then. Both became
proficient teachers in the
ensuing years and both are now
retired. In their days at the old
R.C,S., the staff was: principal
Miss Mary Strathdee and
assistant Miss Viola Gilfillan —
both- deceased. Miss pilfillan
passed away earlier this
-summer in her ninety-ninth
year. Mrs.. Donald Douglas was
the former Helen Scott and she
was born in Lucknow in 1898.
When she was five years old, the,
family moved to North.Dakota.
Three yeais later her 'mother
passed away., Helen, her
younger sister Annie, and
brother Bill came back to
Ontario 'by train. Her. sister
Annie, came back to' Ontario by
train. Her sister Annie was
-raised -by-the-MacKenzie. family_
of Ashfield and Helen by the.
John R. MacDonald family on
e:fourth-of-liuron. Annie is
now Mrs. Eugene Martyr of
Kincardine. A second :brother
Henry who remained, with. his
father now resides in. Florida.
Helen, who was known here, as
Nellie, attended the Flowerdale
school on the fourth concession
east. The building still stands
and is used' by Ripley beekeeper
Morrison MacKenzie of
InverhurOn.
Then after graduation from
the R.C.S., she attended
Stratford Normal 'school to
become a public school teacher.

Miss Nellie "Scott was • this
reporter's first teacher at S.S.
Number 5 on the sixth
concession west in Huron
township. away back in 1919.
Many years later she and her
husband remained after the
annual' ' concert and
commencement in.m. the new
auditorium ,at the Ripley
District High School to renew
• acquaintances. Another Ontario
school in which she taught was
near the famous bird, sanctuary
at. Kingtville. The late Jack
Miner was a neighbour and a
friend. The ."honk honk" of the
wild geese was a familar sound
in this school. Then Miss Scott
moved to Albert to continue in
the,,„ teaching profession. At
queenstOwn there, where she
was teaching she 'was the only
person unable to speak
Norwegian — the common
language of the community. Her
husband Donald was-a merhber
of the pioneer Douglas family
on the fourth concession east in
Huron township. After their
marriage 48 years ago they,lived
on their, farm "eight miles from
Granum, Alberta. They have a
family—of two sons and. one
daughter; Roddy the oldest is a
mining engineer at Trail, British
Columbia. Jean, their daughter,
is married in Thunder Bay,
Ontario and Donald, the
younger: son, operates the home ,
farm.

actively engaged in many
different community activities in
the. Granum area --- teacher of
Grade 5 in the school there,
secretary of the Rural
telephone Company, worker in
thf Red Cross receiving a 25
year pin; fotirider of the
and president, of the Home and
School Association. She has
been involved, in Church Sunday
school, and Ladies' Aid , work.
All this time She has been 'a
writer — now with three books
published. The first book is
entitled "Echoes of. Willow
Creek”. She was president of
the Willow Creek Association.
The second one is ' "Golden.
Kernels" — a story of her home
town. Granum, its past and its
homesteaders.
Back here in. Huron township
' where Mrs. Douglas' spent tier
early life — the John R.
MacDOnald farm is now owned
and operated by Mr. and Mrs.
Peter van Dam and family. The
house where she stayed while
attending the R.C.S. is now Mrs.
Ellis Gossell's home. In 'her
'years here it was owned
Gardam and her three children
-- Bernice, Russell" and Ethel
lived there. Down 'the sixth
concession old number five
school still stands now empty
and somewhat dilapidated but
with the promise of being
repaired into a workshop by its
present owner. a Mr. Palmer. It
Was owned for some years by the
late Jack Liddle. The home of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Archie
-Cameron where she stayed at
the. road. bend west of the
Murray Hunter farm has been
gone for yeara. In closing may
we wish Mr. and Mrs. Douglas
continued enjoyment of their
retirement at their home in
Granuni and express thanks to
Mrs. Frank (Elizabeth) Fair for
much of this information.

team with Joe Tiffin manager ,
played Clifford Intermediates in
an 0.A.S.A: playoff garne at.
Clifford on Thursday evening with
a score 10-0 in favor of White-
church.
