To promote a- rich dark green
colour and, a healthy turf; re-
t Guelph .have found_
that 1 1/2 lbs. of actual Nitrogen
per 1,000 sq. feet should be ap-
plied at least three times each
year.
The researchers also found
they got a tremendous response
to Phosphate on new seedlings,
but, very little response to Potash.

CHECK YOUR. MOW FOR .C\
HEATING HAY
Hal Wright, former Farm Safe-
ty Specialist with .; OMAF, says
farmers should check damp hay
for heating.
A probe can be made of 10 feet
of 1/2 inch electrical conduit tub-
ing. A sharpened hardwood point
is riveted to one end' and about
holes-drilledlust---a- boy
the point. ,
Drive the probe 8 or 9 feet into
the hay and lower a candy 'or
oven thermometer to the bottom
of the tube. Remove the therm:
curter 'after 5 4ninutes,• and, take
a reading of the temperature.
Mr. Wright gives the' following
temperature signposts:
150°F. --- entering the *danger
zone7—Make--tempera--
ture observations daily.
160° F. — Danger! Inspect' every
four hours to see if the
temperature is rising.
175° F. — Fire pockets may be
anticipated. Call the fire
department-pumper-and
wet down the hay.
185° F. — Remove the hay. The
pumper should be a-
vailable since flames
will develop when, air
comes in contact with
the hay.
210° F.Critical! The hay is —
almost certain to ignite.
