The, weather man provided ideal
dry warm sunny ,days this past
week,and long week end. With
Victoria holiday on Monday,
many visitors were here and
People from this district away.. It
marked the first week in several
that the Ripley fire whistle has not
sounded. The seeding of spring
grain, is finished and the cattle are
once more out on grass.

The Ripley District High School
had dances on both Friday and
Saturday evening - on Friday it
was the annual Prom' for the
school and on Saturday it was the
dance for Barb and Charles Liddle
who were married on Saturday
afternoon,. Next week end the
Ripley Firemen are holding
their big annual dance with the
Lionel Thornton orchestra , also
in the school auditorium.

Early last week Harold Courtney
had 'the cement foundation and
basement walls poured for his new
house. It is located on the eighth
Concession, west of his present
home at Pine River.

It was amid the flowers that the
'Ripley and District Horticultural
Society met on the evening of
May 16th, 1972, The flowers in
question were an abundant display
of African VioletS which compli -
mented the already beautiful
home ,of Mrs. Evian McLean. In
keeping with the policy of some-
thing new at the meeting, corsag-
.es were arranged and• worn by most
of \the members present. Mrs. •
David. Elphick gave a talk on
Landscaping and she stressed _ „
planning with balance , simplicity
and scale.
If were not present at the
meeting, then you missed the
opportunity to purchase some very
interesting plants , including
several of Mrs. MeLean's African
Violets. Proceeds go to the Soc-
iety. The convenor of the even-
ing was Mrs. Gordon Farrell. •
Prizes were won by Mrs., Frank
Fair and Mrs. Glen Stanley. Mrs.
Stanley expressed appreciation to
Mrs. Elphick and. Mrs. McLean fot
the delightful evening.
The Spring Flower Show will be
held in the Legion Hall, Ripley
in the afternoon of June 20t11.

pany of Hepworth has been busy
this past Week hauling gravel fort,
the Huron Township concession
roads. 'They are 'hauling ,from the
MacTavish pits, coming out on.
roadway_the_ at_theaktgeeres,..,_
halfway between the fourth and
second concession.on Ernie
olling's farm. Last week, using •
their large hopper, trucki , they
were gravelling the second con-
cession west: On Friday ev ening‘
they lined up at least,seven vehic-
les just south of the new .Huron .

After many years of careful
attention and work on the Ripley
and District Horticultural Society's
rose bed in front of the Ripley
Huron Legion Hall, Ripley's Harry .
Scott has retired this, spring and
Inn away his "pruning shears and
hoe. Harry also looked after the
Society's flower beds at the front
of the Ripley Cemetery..Taking
Harry's place doing this work is
,Ab Tout of Ripley.

For the 'sake of safety it is too
bad that a coupleof speed traps
could not 'be set up in Ripley. The
-stretch-orrthe fifteenth, espeLialtyr
past the rinks seems to be a speed
demon's paradise. Who pays any
attention-to those3-0 mile signs? -
To motorists , passing through, it
is just anotfiet 'hick town, so step
on it.
Back home .to Ripley with that
Florida stin tan is Mrs. E.O.
Forrester of Malcolm Street. Mrs.
Forrester and her sister , Mrs.
Kellington of Toronto,spent a few '
weeks in Florida visiting with
their' brother who has a home
there.

end at Red' Bay in the Bruce Pen-
insula.
BROWNIE NEWS
The Brownies started their meet-
ing on Tuesday, May 16th by play-
ing skipping games. Then Fairy
Queen Anne Alton got out the
Toadstool for Brownie Ring.
At Pow Wow we sang Happy
Birthday to 'Lyn Shepherd. Brenda
Phillips showed three things of
nature plus her, post cards for
Collector Badge. Elizabeth Wilk-
ins then told the 'Brownies about
the picture she had made from
things found out of doors. Brown
to have a guest at next week's
meeting, to tell them about saf-
ety rules for riding their bicycles.

The pavement on both sides of
Ripley's main shopping block
has been marked out with white
painted lines for parking areaS.
It' was, done last Thursday and -
Friday"by the work crew namely,
Jim Bonnett , Ernie Stauffer , Mel
Arnold and Burton MacLeod with
Ambrose Gamble, village fore -
man in charge, This represents a
first time that the village has had
individual parking areas marked
out.

• Coming up this Thursday after-
noon 'are two machinery sales at
farms close to Ripley. The first
one is at the farm of Lloyd
Wylds, just south of Ripley, on the
fifteenth. Then the scene shifts to
the farm of Alan McLean on the
eighth concession, just west of
Ripley. In both cases the farms
have been sold , so all
machinery will be cleared at both
sales.
