last Wednesday evening in the
Ripley-Huron Legion Hall.
Ladies of the Legion Auxiliary
prepared and served the meal.
There is considerable interest .in
the new Lions Club and itls com-
mendable to note that a great
deal of this is ,corning from the
younger Men, not only in Ripley,
but also from Huron Township. .

ing a 'car wash at the. Ripley Dist-
rict High School. Several girls
were on hand to do the car clean-

held their May Meeting on Mon-
day evening of last week in the
cafeteria room at the Ripley Dist-
rict High School. It was 'seeding
weather for the farmers and this
was clearly shown in the attend-
ance. However, several matters
were discussed.. The secretary
read a, letter from a company,
which easily supplies three quart-
ers of the seed corn sown 'in Hur-
on Township, and its president
appreciates this by refusing.a: don-
aiion to the society while.another
,company baSed in Chatham made
a'generous donation., The corn,

Last Wednesday evening, after
a day at beekeePing in Ashfield

writer dispatched two adult garter
snakes to their rest,. there was a
large glass bottle awaiting him'
at the front door. Youguessed it'
another snake awaiting identifica-
tion. A closer look showed 'it was
a small, brown snake' about a 'foot
'longw Mr, a tweedyfre-dred -----
appearance and alight coloured
band dawn the middle of its
back. It was an adult DeKay's ,
snake. -, the smallest and gentlest
kind in Ontario. It is quite com-
mon, although seldofn seen be-
causel it is so small. This one
had been brought to Ripley by
Mrs. Eileen Emmerton. Her hus-
band, Gord, had found it while
raking along the farm laneway on
the sixth concession west of the
cheese factory at the lake front.
Most folks remember Gord as the
great softball pitcher for Pine
River over 3 0 years ago, On
Thursday the snake, in its jar,
was taken to Ripley District High'
School-where science teacher Mr.
Sam Malhotra had it on exhibit.
