LETTER TO THE EDITOR Arena Committee Reply To Letter Re Ice Time In reference to a letter in last week's issue of The Sentinel contributed by the management of the intermediate hockey team, we think it only fair that the arena committee should set the readers /straight on a few points. In the first place., the schedule . for th-e- minor-teams was drawn-up before the intermediate team was organized. After staggering a few games early in their schedule, the intermediates were allotted Monday night. We were told the ' visiting teams refused to play Mon• day night. CoMe play-off time , we cancelled a Saturday night public skating. They also had a Sunday game scheduled and that week for-some reason or other, they were able to get a team for Monday night.' On Tuesday, March-28-,--the— arena committee met with the intermediate team management to discuss ice time after April 1. The town clerk and hydro' chair- man had figures to show the hydro, 'plus caretaker's salary , would be iri excesskof $600.00; . The team management stated at that time that they would_not spend that kind of money and that they could get ice in Wing- ham for $25.00 per game. The arena committee Was asked to keep the arena in operation until the completion of the At- wood series which we willingly agreed to do. The. series ended Sunday, April 2. In the meantime , our-arena, manager had a commitment to make-a-ttip--west-for-a-tiansporr • dollars for the financial gain of others. Arena Should: Be Used Lucknow Sentinel, If a town cannot back up its local youngsters there is' some- thing drastically wrong with the taxpayers in the town and surround- ing area. There is. a, team o oung men who have gotten thems ves to- . gether to form a hockey team with compensation against them- selves, for they have had, to take out of their own pocket money to pay for their ice• time which in- cludes practice and home games. The local Legion are the only ones who would stand up and re- cognize this _team; of young`men. The town council, or whatever powers govern our little town of Lucknow , decided they•could'not afford to keep the ice in the arena after such a date which they said was costing' so much money, but any person could • have gone down and floodedthe arena floor and it would have frozen solid, so therefore there would not have been mai, if any, extra taxes put upon the local taxpayers. I, as a local taxpayer, am ' pretty proud of the local men who have formed a team and made a good accounting for themselves. It's too bad that the town has to let them down. Right now the arena is sitting empty. It's not being used for hockey, fair, or horticulture use, but, it is still costing taxpayers as Much money (even more) than if theyfiad 'kept ice in it. . Now .it is sitting there like a big barn with no.cattle , but which we still havelo pay taxes for. We have a beautiful arena , let's use it. BILL SANDERSON.
