Bruce Farm Report
FARM RC.ORDS
• Farm record books ,are still
available as always from this. of--
fice; Persons, needing aid• in the
completion of these books, can
obtain it here also.
• In past, years, many record
books have been analysed and
summarized by this office. This
service is still available. There
are appipximately thirty farmers
on Canfarm. This is a computer
record keeping system. Records
.are kept on a monthly basis and
mailed to Guelph: Using this sys-
.tetn, farmers are aware of 'their
total • receiPts .and expenses at
almost all films during the year.
It is possible to handle some
new accounts in 1972 on this sys-
tem. AOone wishing to take ad-
vantage of this program should
contact this office as soon as
possible. •
ACID .SOILS
Acid soils are. not .a problem
in Bruce County, ' but alkaline
soils are quite prevalent. PH
values between 7.5 and 8.3 are
quite-common. Soils that are high
in limestone or dolomite .show
such high values.
The reduction of soil PH is not
practicalfor the production of
farm crops but may be pratical
on a small scale for ornamentals
such as rhododendrons.
, There 'is no real cause for con.-
bern.....a.s_thi„sPH will tend to be
lowered over the year-s-by:-=-- the-
decomposition of organic residues
which produce. acids, • 7- the ap-
plication ,pf fertilizers (some of
which are acid in nature or leave
acid residues), — leaching' of
basic material: 'So ,far there is
virtually' no evidence that crop
growth has been hindered in this
county by high•PH values.
