This was the third in a series of meetings instituted, by the, board to create abetter under-, standing of things'educational in the county system. The topic was elementary school, grading proeediues. The committee felt that the successful introduction of new ideas.into our schools requires special care._ When they are im-' 'posed, introduced by edict, or When they are token innovations, even the best ideas make little impact on creating ,the conditions for improved learning. However , the committee felt that there are important innovations that • every staff should try. A survey of the elementary schools in-the county showed that . many' of the schools are already using the non-grading system to a degree. Perhaps you -have already heard your child speak of some of them. (1) Open Concept - the openness relates- Mainly to the style Of the teacher,. Pupil$ use Audio-visual, equip- ment, work on their Own, and talk , freely. with the' teacher s (2),Open Program Pupils have some choice regarding materials, topics,,Inedia. Pupils often work • In groups using library and class- rooms. Teacher guides, 'plans and tracks progress. (3) Rotary - Classes move from teacher to teacher; Teachers specialize. in subject areas: (4) Traditional Grading - a School organization whereby one grade - one teacher- one Class is assigned to a room. (5) Non-graded - Any change in a school's organizational pattern or a classroom organizational pattern whiCh cuts across grade lines.. (6) - A group es- tablished at a specific .." academic level regardless of grade or age. Children at one spelling level niay span grade 4- 6 and/or age 9,12 years. (7) Units - a certain :amount of Work carefully spiciffed often approximately one third of a year. ,(8) Joplin Plan - a, number of grades.taking the satne Sub-. jett—arttie-,----Saf5r into levels according to academic ability. (9) Continuoul progress - any form of tion7gradedness which means that pupils do not need to, repeat.a year's 'work', or •progress beyond theirdepth; (10) Unit or Theme Teaching a theme such as MeXico is used to develop read- ing skills; as a basis for mathem- atics; science, art, music spell- ing words.. All subjects are integ- rated'so that'pupils"learn•a great deal about the theme rather than simply a study of a country.' , The Board recommended the following guidelines in connec- tion withthe non-grading system (a) permit Principals and/teachers to attempt non-graded or continuous progress programs In their classrooms. (b) require prin- cipals tb budget for expenditure required to implement, continue or expand such programi; (c) 'en- courage public awareness of the establishment' of continuous'pro.,• gess programs; (d) encourage fin- which are willing to write, under- take, and open to the 'public projects in non-grading.
