'BASIC HERD What it is about.
With;' the oncome of new tax
legislation and the proposed abol-
ition . of "Establishment of Basic
Herd there are 'a considerable
amount of enquiries regarding this
business aspect of farming.
A basic herd can be established
for cattle, horses, sheep or swine,.
Animals purchased for feeder opt
erations cannot.,; be included in -a.
Basic Herd;
What it means to .a farmer
that -if lie_has established a''Basic
Herd thirty.:. days prior to ; dispers-
-ing his herd,. then the '.sale value
of those animals included in his
basicherd will. not be considered
as income and therefore will not
be taxed as ,incom e..
Establishment of a basic ' herd '
is a very simple procedure and is
simply a, matter of • ompleting a
couple of lines on a form and send
ing ' it to the Department. of Nat
ional Revenue at Kitchener.
Most all accountants will help, a
farmer to establish a basic herd,
•and ensure that it is, done prop-
erly. Farmers who have• presently
established' a' basic herd can also
he of help in ekplalning_its ign-.
ificance. Forms for establishing
: a basic herd can be obtained at
the .Ontario Department. of 'Agri
wouldwelcome' any enquiries on
basic herd •.and would hope that.
those people wishing to establish
:basic herds- could do so without
delay:
