SYMPTOMS'
A harsh dry cough and • in some
cases an eye and, nasal• discharge •
accompanied by '105 to 108° tem'
perature. They usually, recover in:
approximately 10 days unless a -
secondary • infection leading, to'.
pneumonia causes _further prob-
lems: • '
IBR will. also cause' diarrhea in
calvesand abortion 'in pregnant
cows; . •
TREATMENT OF 'IBR
Antibiotics to prevent the devel-
opment
evehopment of a .secondary bacterial
pneumonia are frequently employ-,
ed. Since the disease is caused by
a virus no direct benefit is .derived
from the effect of the drug on the
:•IBR ``germ", and any , clinical
benefit of the drug in .the condit
ion'is scarcely noticed, •The results
obtained` from the treatment of
the., enteric (scouring), :form of
IBR are not encouraging.. Fluids,.
electrolytes . and antibiotics are
used but these:. °give a very poor
recovery' rate. The losses in young
calves may be.up to 100% Because:
of the ,complexities. in . the treat-
ment and ' control of this' disease,
veterinary assistance is import-
ant, particularly • in'•.. the early. '.
stages of an outbreak.
