Lucknow Village Council,, at their,December meeting, passeda
the use of snowmobiles within
motion to proceed; with a bylaw •banning
the village limits., :It has yet to be passed..'
Council 'took this action because. of 'increasing complaints from
taxpayers of the village as well as personal •observationsby council.
of the abuse of . the. privileges • now :oof erred -to saowmobilers.
We view this bylaw with mixed feelings. We can understand the
opinion of . residents who have experienced '.damage to their property
by trespassing snowmobilers: We can also appreciate the°feelings of
light sleeping : citizens who .findthe noise' a bother to them However,

'nor, do we have. any problem sleepingthrough the noisiest of situations.
One thing 'does concern us'Y neatly, however,'. and that is ;that
someone, Ahrough the, stupid ,antics of • some snowmobilers, may be
killed or seriously inured'. There are dangers in all sports;however,
and some 2comrnon sense' operations will greatly' reduce this `danger
'in snowmobiling:`
We 'fins:, concern for the snowmobile owner, who may f town 'a
$1000 piece of machinery which he' and ` his familyhave found gives
them a, great deal of winter pleasure, and, yet because of. the pro-
posed,
ro-
posed- bylaw, may not be 'able to o drive the vehicle up beside their
house. Then again, those ..who +' advocate the use ;: of . the bylaw are
'quick' to remind you that an enthusiastic, boater has to haul his boat
• to. the water. before he can use it and they say, "Why, not a snow
mobile?„
Reference was made at last, week's council., meeting to , the ' use
of -Gough Street as a snowmobile' speedway in the village This hap-
pens to be the street we'live on and we would be the first to say that
it is not snowmobiles which bother us. on, Gough'' Street, it is licenced
automobile drivers, winter :and stimaier, who make the street dan=
gerous or dren b t ei - oVer=the.sp ed=driving.
. 1' r
We're glad we ' are not a council ,member with this 'problem.
Likewise, we are glad we do not own a " snowmobile. The decision,
one way or another, cannot be a popular one with everyone.
