R. ' E. McKinley, M. 'P. for
Huron, has been concerned about
the possibility ore mercury
poisoning in the fish in Lake
Huron. The concern arises from
the discovery that some species
of fist in Lake St. Clair and Lake
Erie have been affected by mer-
cury pollutants in the discharge
from chemical plants in that
area.
In, response to Mr. McKinley's
U o es on plc ere!' in
the southern part of Lake Huron
showed .38 parts' per million.
Farther north in the lake, in the
Goderich area, showed pickerel
with. only .08' parts, per million.
showing 'only .04 partsper mil-
lion. • .
Tests on Cohoe salmon have not
been completed. A problem
arises in testing on salmon
because of their high fat, content.
The danger ' le el for mercury
contamination is considered to be
.5 parts per million, so It would
appear that there is no real daft
ger as far as any Lake Huron fish
are concerned, . . . •
