LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO FORUM Noble.Thoughts, and Nicholls' Notions PUTTING. LABELS ON PEOPLE . • 1 wish that communicators such. • as Writers, speakers, and TV. announcers Would stop putting labels.ori, classes, andgroups, of ,people, Not only do they put .a. c block in..the-away...of_undexstanding.,.: • they;also 'de -humanize people. and, encourage.prejudices against ' particular•groups'and organiza- tions of persons. Just the other day I read a one- page article which included the following labels: teenagers,: long- ' haired. ones , middle-aged squares, cat ; straight,, head (someone iii- volved, in and knowledgable about the drug scene), .greasers (Motor- cycle clubs), glue sniffers*, teeny boppers , and cops. What do they all mean? . A person almost needsa translator to help him ,reed an article. Why .are the•' labels used? Perhaps.cornmunica- :ors want` to cut down on the num- oer of words they use in order to make their poirits. quickly , so. they develop a short -hand langu- age. Perhaps.they are only . copying the code languag ;. of - youth who'use it •to assert their.. • independence from the world of •/ authort.ty. B rrby using these ' labeas', they -put --a biockrin-the= way of .und'ersta'nding. If this..were th'e only difficulty ti with, using labels, tn.ost of us could survive and struggle •to understand:'what is being'said, But the use of labels becomes' another" method through which we de-hutnajiz,e people.. ' We heara g• deal a bau.t loss of .identity good because --•-of ati-rlottptite-r.r ed -a -n11 technological society: People - - become things to, be manipulated, digits and statistics, instead of• • individual-' persons. It. seems to me that to label groups• o.f people likeyou would: a can of peas just emphasizes the de -humanizing process in our society.. • • The rnost serious problem ar.is- ing from the use of labels for people is the problem of prejud- ice. • What picture comes to mind when I use the work "hippie".. Do you immediately think 'about soineone with long hair .and a beard, who wears sun glasses., odd clothes, no shoes , and who has notseen water for weeks? If so, you have been'suc'cessfully influen c'ed to a prejudiced -.position by: those' whouse labels to convey their ideas.- You have a pre -con; ce.ived stereotype .of a human being which prevents you from en -whim as an individual and a person,_ And .you -will automatic- ally 'believe that anyone who fits the description above:is a worth• less drag to ,our society; With • F,asr, couRTEovs CleaningSERV!CE SIEGRIST'S, LUCKNOW MONDAY, WEDNESDAY; FRIDAY PANNABECKER'S, S.T.
