EVERYBODY SAVING A BUCK
•
Huron °County councillors: must have been boning up on the high
costs of inflation, for at their meeting last week they, sawed:no less than,
$27,600 off the, budget proposedby their own public health committed.
The cut amounted, to just about 10 per cent of the expenditure recom,
mended by the committee.
We won't suggest whether council was right or wrong: We elect
these men to represent uss when decisions of this .kind are required,
• and we must abideby the course they take.. ;•
'
• However, some aspects of their discussion • might. just 'indicate
•
that: the councillors are not as keenly aware of today's .problems as
they could be, For example, one . of the. items which they threw out
was 'a • recommended. $4,500 for • a, nurse to work with problems of
addiction.. (This 'in the face of widespread use;of drugs by young people
and the staggering losses•which are attributable to alcoholic addiction).
'• The $4,000 proposed as salary for a geriatric nurse to ease .the.
burdens of .older people was also deleted, along with a $700 travelling
-allowance-:%r-the-two nurses_in -question:
What We cannot avoid wondering about is the reaction of the
members of the health committee which had s obviously spent a long
time deciding on the budget & health program 'they.would recommend.
The system of committee=jurisdietion-ewer. the -various -departments of
county'. responsibility seems rather pointless when a report can be' com-
pletely shredded by the.' open council;. other members of which have
not had an opportunity to study and discuss the various items at any
length.;/ .
Laudable though council's money ..saving spirit may be, it con-•
frosts rather sharply with expenditures of another. and more personal
nature,-Reeve-Der-ry- oyle-ofT-xeter•-made-his annual'--plearfor-a-
cutback in the amount of money spent. for social' affairs.. The. Exeter:
min '• said it is costing the taxpayer $4,000.`a year for. council's recre
do, "The taxpayer. shouldn'tThave"to pay for 'these friviolities," he
a,•.. "This is a place to tome for work."
A voice from the -council seats repeated the old saw. about "all
work and no play makes Jack a dull boy ', which :brought the retort
from Mr. Boyle that he . would pay for his own playing and he re-
minded -councils
e to ing : + a • ay - and that's: 'good
pay» y
There' is no 'indication' that. council was interested in reducing
the cost of "playing which is just about what it would cost to ehire
a nurse for the balance of''the year to lend a hand to old people or to
fight 'the tragedies -Of-addiction.- - •
