ROAD DAMAGE MAY SPELL DOOM
Studded tires . may be on the way • off Canadian' roads if recent
findings of several researchers find their way into legislation.
. Engineers from •-the Ontario Department of Highways and, in-
dependently, a Montreal consulting engineer both came up with reports
that 'say the damage to highways by studs may . well' outweigh' any pos-:
sible safety merits. :' •
DHO's one-year study suggested that in two years,'. the cumu-
lative damage to Ontario highway paveinentsw, ould be •'over. $10. Mil-
lion, or about $7° per car, . .
Studs, thesay,can reduce a highwa's normal lifeAan by 50%
to 75C'e if the pavementP pis bare. Repairs to, stud -caused damage would•
amount to - .about 3',1, of the highways' budget, :
e sa e" 1 I : t-rutting"f-1 nn. -would' likel r. oeour
withinitoL5 v a>t_on• more heavily travelled roads, meaning more
frequent' resurfacing would be °needed. The ruts woald affect steering
.control, reduce, skid resistance and create ponds of water and .icy
Ontario is now considering, legislation to ban the tires on the
provinces's 8,000 miles of •:highways, 'A decision could be. made by next
• falLreversing one in' 1968 that pemitted the use of the•'studded tire.
