Weekly. newspapermen appear to be a : touchy lot, . , especially : •
when it comes to'reference ,to the age of ,their: newspaper and -thus
fact was emphasized a few weeks ago when this reporter managed to
-get off on the wrong foot in announcing te;:purchase of the Teeswater
News° The article was printed in. The. Lucknow Sentinel and distributed
in the Teeswater 'area so that readers ' would be aware ; of the change
in News ownership.:`
In the, article we . stated that The News was established in .:1866

• from the ,province in centennial year. The : first. part of this is true; the
News was established. in 1866.4The third part is 'also trite, it did 're-
ceive a Centennial plaque froin . `the': province, presented by Murray.
Gaunt, M.P.P. However, the : second, part, stating that it was the only
paper in. Bruce County to receive. such an award, is false• and we
humbly . apologize to. the Walkerton1Ierald-Times, Paisley Advocate
and Port Elgin Tunes who also . received `such' awards::
Through a misunderstanding,' it was later determined that 'the
News was the only paper in Huron -Bruce riding, not Bruce County,'.to.
receive the award.
We certainly stirred ; up a furor, particularly in Paisley and
Walkerton: The phones were ringing and the typewriters clattering
following our error. Bruce MacKenzie, editor of the Paisley Advocate;
devoted a fullcolumin on the front page pointing out our error and
e#pressing' his surprise that l the Teeswater News 'was . a Centennial
award winner. Bruce had understood” that only three papers in Bruce
'County received'. such an honour.. We were quite aware of Teeswater's
award as we. had presented' Alby Worrell with a similar type framed
certificate on behalf of the Ontario * Weekly Newspapers Association in
addition to the Province award presented by Murray Gaunt.
Harold- Wesley; editor of the Walkerton Herald Times, • copied
