AGOOD TOWNF
"
There is no question about .it -- ,some towns are better than
others. Size doesn't mean, much. If you want an . example, take a look
at . Lucknow. On a basis of population it is a livelier• community than
most others in this area. In,iact it can stay in,therunning, with a 'good
many larger, communities; : '
Of course. Lucknow is not the, only example of a "good" Corti-
munity. We can think of others' .which' fall into ;this same category.
In the • upper levels of 'the population range there is Kitchener, a •city
• which had a reputation as 'a' prosperous place even in depressiondays,
when many of the larger cities were • concentrations: of pure, misery..
What are' the ingredients which go to make up a `good" town
or, city; or- pillage? Certainlygone-cannot,-discount-such_natiral advent--

rialized areas or exceptional agricultural regions'. These physical
tors. have a great influence on the financial :.prosperity of. any coin-
munity, and •where dollars flow more freely and 'employment remains.
steadily at : a, high and well-paid rate, the community usually is able
to boat of better homes and stores and recreational facilities. .
However, the financial factor is far from the only standard by
• which a community can be judged We can think. of several towns- in
Western Canada, for' instance,, where income ' standards . have never
even approached those wetake: for. granted, but they are places' where
everybody speaks of thea'; home town ':with pride - where :there' is
never a shorttage of volunteers for , the •tasks which Must be done: to
keep their :communities vital and :progressive.
In the filial analysis. it is the spirit oftheaverage citizen which:

life of the lace suffers: Its financial prosperity is curtailed and its
young people, :convinced by their: elders that'they live in a miserable

We're not pointing any fingers of accusation, but we are thinking
