AN ItalsonTater DEC/SION.-The Mid- land Home and Loan Co.. of Port Hope.agreed In 1895 to pay taxes to the town for five years on an Income of $20,000. In 1900 the law Was changed so that towns or rinses could tax only on income derived within their limits. The company then refused to pay on the fixed assessment, and the junior county judge upheld this view. On Monday the Divisional Court at To- ronto ordered the payment of the full amount due on the whole $20,000 as- sessment. INDUSTRIAL. Buchanan, of Zutich, who has been pursuing an honor course in rnodeil languages in Toronto University with marked suc- cess fur the last four years, has been appointed to a fellowship in romance languages in Chicavo Univereity. We enderstand that the award was given Oti a thesis dealing with a passage in Dante's Divine Comedy, regarding which Mr. Buchanan has suggested an entirely new intepretation. THE G. N. W. EXHIBITION. -On Saturday last the boards of the West Riding Agricultural and the Goderich Horticultut al Societies met in the Court House, and having agreed on the usual terms of amalgamation for the year, proceeded with the revision ot the prize list for the 1901 fall fair. Quite a number of changes were made, but less than half the revision was ac- cotsplished, and another tneeting will be necessary therefor, which will lid held to-ntorrow afternoon. The board decided that the fair last year wits held too set rly, and Oetober 1 and 2 are the datesWefivted for 1901. A STUPID BLUNDER. -An Ottawa despatch says the officials of the Fi• nance Department admit that the pic• tura nn the fitee of the new four-dollat bill is that of the Am erican el.so lock. A local man was asked to furnish 11 photograph of the ()embalmer lock, but not having one in his possession he ad- vised the department to send to Mont- real. The Montreal man sent up picture of the American lock and the Finance Depertment useJ It. The officials say they wet e misled by notice ing the C. P. R. steamer Athabasca in the lock, and asauened in consequence that the picture was ail right. Curt- ouely enough, the Department of Railways and,Canals, which has scot -es of photos of the canals, was never con- sulted about the matter. A MILD BREAK. -The Maitland river broke up on Monday, and the break was one of the mildest known for years. es the water never rose to fully coeer the Islands, and the ice was broken to the smellest of pieces. There was no block at the mouth, nor were Attrill's flats eubmergedand the river was open all round Saltford,a most notion/it state of things for the annual break up of the Maitland. As is usual, numbers of our people were along the banks on Monday and Tuesday. all of whom were sorely diseppointed at the mild entertainment movided by old Mait- land. Tun Fenn AGENCY FAXE.-Tbe Woodstock pavers report a lot of farmers in that neighborhood in a state ot worry. "Four or five years ago it man catne around, who said he was the agent for the Canadian Farm Advertiser of Guelph. He got the tanners to let him ndyettise their farms for sale. If sold hin concern wits to get three per cent. of the prices. A ket of farmers signed contract*. Soine farms were gold ; most, were not. Now enother agent is around display- ing to the nsteniahed yeoman a paper with their eignatures attached, in which they agtee, it their far ms were not sold in three Terme to pay the advertiser one per cents of the price put on them. One farmer has claim of $210 against Others are low- er. They all say they never made eny agreement to pay one per cent. and claim It ter a swindle." Tins STAR has an unpaid claim for /revered gems' sub- sertption against J. J. Daley & 0o., who we believe are the ageism and frorn our experience with them we have formed the game opinion that the WOodetock farmers express. though, so far, the new organization has not challenged any other club tor a test of skill, it is rumoured that early next season there will be two sevens that will give and accept challenges from any point in the Dominion. So far as possible the metnliers have prac- tised with closed doors. but a member informed THE STAR that their prac- tises improved daily, that they do not fall as frequently, and that when they do they cut better figures on the ice than forinerly.-On kriday evening the Scrapers and Elites met on the West street rink. and the contest, a keen one, was remarkably well fought out. These teams are the beet ntatched in town, and so even are they in play that the result is always in doubt, till time is called. As is usual when they meet, there was no unne- cessary slashing or emashing, and there Was considerable clever combin- ation play, making the match a plea( surable and exciting one for onlookers. A CALIFORNIA VERSION. - OUP townsman, Mr. NVm. Warnock. has had the pleasure of seeing hie name in Print from all over Dna continent, reee the champion grower of big squashes, and recently he received a request from the San Francisco CAI for a photogt aph of his 1900 production. This week be received a copy of the: paper with the photograph reproduced and the following very funny version of how the sample was grown : There are pumpkins and pumpkins. The me in the picture le a pumpktre It grew in Ontario. Canada, which to ember. ragging to California. but me might as well accept the fact that It le a big one. Tun LAST L1TERARY.-There was a good attendance at the open meeting of the Collegiate Institute Literary Somety on Friday evening, and the audience was an appreciative one. Miss Reynolds opened the programme with a well played piano solo; Miss Q. Robertson gave a selected reading. and Miss M. 'Wilson a recitation so effectively as to win an unanimous encore, to which she responded. The Hest part of the programme closed with impromptu speeches by stud- ents singled out by the preeident., who had slips with sulejecte written there- on, and the person called on had to talk on the eubject the selested Mtn called tor. Several responded, includ- ing one gill, and though the speeches were not, elaborate, they were good, considering that nioet of the orators were, as one expressed it "just break- ing the egg." The second part com- menced with the readln g of the Collegiate Institute Journal by editor L. Williams. The nimilier was excel- lent in variety and really good from literary standpoint. Among the items there were, of course, some plagiarisms, but the whole were well selected. and will help the students in sentence framing and composition geaerally. Miss McVIttie, the sweet singer of the Institute, gave a solo and had to respond to a unanimous encore. Principal Strang, in reopens° to the cell of the president. delivered a short toldress. in which he thanked the students for the eindnese of their wel- come after Ids enforced absence ot three weeks. through itinees. Miss Jeckell read a lengthy piece. and Mr. Grant gave an interesting recitation from the Innecents Abroad, end the proceedings cloaed in the usual manner at a father late hour. The programme was nicely Arranged, and. had the reading been of moderate length it would have been tht ()ugh in good time. Another feature we must note, rind that its that sorne of those vette read are not heard in every part of the auditortum, end Mr. Grant's remarks as to the right pitch of voice were timely and should he considered hy all who kindly read at the onen meetings. We ennnot close our notice of the last open meeting of the winbsr term with• out complimenting the boys on their good hehrtvior. It it true they were eometimes restlesre but we believe that ito large a number of young people could not be moreembled anywhere who would have acted with more proprletY then did the etielents of the Collegiate the past winter. ;) A Gooluums Bolt Pfeen.-s-Wend Wee recelyed in town yesterday that James Mutely. at Young men who fortnerle worked le the Organ Factorehere, bet a few menthe ego removed to (Weary. A Ctose CALL. -On Friday morn- ing there was an exciting time near the outer harbor light. On Thursday evening tbe ice broke away front the piers, and separated into blocks, and during the bight the water froze and united the whole. The snow also fell and covered the iee so that the weak spots could not he seen, and when two well known anglers were seeking spots to fish from one of them went through the thin ice. After coneiderabie trouble his companion hauled nim out but tyhile moving along, the cake of ice they were on canted. and they both slipped With assistance one wits won out again, but it took considerable time and great manoeuv- ering to pull out No. 2, and he only got out by the courge of his helpers. and the fact that he was able to media them by gettieg a footon a piece of sunken ice.
