"blood and iron," seem- ed like an appeal to the- demons of velltveg Yet - l,he seventeenth cntury apertio of blood and iron, was sk child of the golden age of England.: In It1s clay the loftiest minds were fed on Macon, Spenser and Shakespeare. and the divine Milton was the spokesttltan of tho dictator's will. As a soldier Cromwell was a Stormer of towns and castles, a load- er in rho breach, a thunderbolt of war. As a reformed statesmen lto first believed in men as fit for free- dom, then in freedom, not men. Ifo first tried to lead wen and ended by driving them. When the march of events had installed him as lord pro- tector, ho said to parliament, "I am a man standing In the place I am in, which place I undertook not so ntucb out, of hope of doing any good as out of a desire to prevent mis- chief and evil which I did see was imminent on the nation, for we were running into confusion and disorder and would have necessarily have run into blood." That Cromwell was no fiery agita- tor by nature is shown in the fact that he remained a simple farmer un- til ho was 40, Then he took up the fight for "no taxation without re- presentation." He was elected to the long parliament, which enededm the long parliament, which ended in LOAD PROTECTOR OF ENGLAND. the commons taking issue with the king. The king in person invaded the house and demanded five of its members, two of whom were (Yom - well's kinsmen. The outrage brought things to a head, and after the great 1'ym had moved that the house go into committee of the whole on the state of the kingdom Cromwell mov- ed the proposition to consider meas- ures for the defence of people's rights. In this long parliament Cromwell made his first speech, which "was very much harkened unto," clad in "a plain cloth suit Heade by a coun- try tailor, with plain linen, not very clean, and a speck or two of blood upon his little band; his stature of good size, his sword stuck close to his side, his voice sharp and untun- able, his eloquence full of fervor." A compact and strung figure, with a head stored with native wisdoni, a fiery temper, generally under con- trol, a readiness of speech, strong, masculine, persuasive, this was Crout0ell at 40 when, with the powers of calm intellect and int - passionate earnestness, he swayed and led the house of commons. Charles I hoisted the signal of war and made the fanloUs Prince Rupert of chief cavalry. Cromwell wont h y home and raised a troop of Round- head cavalry, and this was his com- mand in Lhe army of 10,000 patri- ots which fought the first campaign. It was then he fixed the stamp for the famous Ironsides. He said that the Royalists would bring the gen- tlemen of the kingdom to the field, and they moat be met by men of parts, of substance. of conscience, "men mho have the fear of Cod be- fore dine," After the first campaign Cromwell raised a regiment of horse of the salve pattern as his troop.
