a flurry of genuine snow, be enabled
her to slide on the ice, and in fine
to do all manner of Christmas things,
just as she had donein her native Dev-

Christmas in Ballarat is one of the
midsummer da,ye, and that the mer-
cury in the thermometer stands at 100
in the (shade, it will be admitted that
the. achievement is Line worthy at all
events of a brief sketch.
Alice was a beautiful, motherless
child, with blu., eyes and golden hair,
a, true descendant of t he Celtic Cymri,
and her father fairly adored her. One
day, it was in October, the mail from
England brought a number of colored
prints to Craig -Devon, and amongst
them a picture of Saida Claue, hy
Kaulbach.
Oh, papa 1". cried Alice, " I'm so
glad Chriatmae is cowing, Grandma
told me•1 should see Santa Claus and
bit' reindeer when 1 was old enough
not to be scared, and I'm old enough
now. Ain't I papa 1"
Ileu.seforth Altec talked of little but
Chrietnnte and Santa Claus, not think-

He made arrangements, in fact, to
have a fence constructed around the
crag within which, for one day at tenet,
winter would reign supreme. With

who vvere soon busy building sheds, e x-
eaeating cellars, planting trees, crest-
ing pools for sliding purposes, and do-
ing ol,her things to gel the place ready
to assume a wintry aspect at the pro-
per time. Meanwhile the atmosphere
grew hotter and bit er each day.
Alice's stockings were hung tip
