A., of Whitechurch, was called, and inducted as colleague to the Rev, Dr. Twoyears later, Dr, the,beloved by his own people, and respected by alt, was compelled by failing health to retire from the active work of the ministry, after a {faithful and fruitful pastorate in this 'charge of twenty-eight years. In the same year Leeburn and Union Churches were separated from Knox Church, and Rev. Mr. Anderson as- sumed the full charge of the congre- gation. Spiritual and financial pros- perity attended the labors of the pastor, until in 1897 the church was again rembdelied and enlarged to its present dimensions at a cost of $ 11,- 000. With a seating capacity of 1,120 Knox Church congregation now boasts of a place of worship which for beauty, comfort and gen- eral effect is surpassed by few in any of our cities. Robt, Ure, of Streets - was tailed, and inducted into church, In 9875, another oak place by which the four g Presbyterian bodies in a joined together and formed esbyterian Church in Canada. This edifice was erect- ed and dedicated in ;804, replacing the qld frame chyrch which had done service fqr over half a century. it ctist over it t6,000, and is built of stone quarried from the banks of the river Maitland, The interior, though plain, is- very chaste and complete, The windows are beautiful works of the stained glass art, made by Cabane, and are equal to those of the finest city churches. To the present pastor, Rev. Father West, is mainly due the credit of securing the erection of this handsome church, and his congregation, after so many years effort, well deserve the success which now marks their existence as a church organization. From the year 1830 or 1833 to 1843, the Rev. Fathers Dempsey, Downey, Gibney, and others visited Goderich occasionally. In 1843 Rev. Father Schneider was appoint- ed first parish priest of Goderich, During his pastorate ho had the fol. tawinacurates or assistants: Fathers Ryan, Mouloy, keleler and Waaser- eatt. In x868 Father Boubat suc- cee ed Father Schneider, 'Father ©'lea followed Father Boubat in 1844' in r88o Father Watters was Appel ed pastor. The presnt North St. church was erected during the pastorate of his successor, Rev. Thomas Cosford, and was enlarged in later years to the present form and capacity, as the needs of the congregation re- Cwired. The Wesleyan and New onnexion Methodist Bodies of Canada united In 9874, and four years after this union the congrega- tion, which had been of the New Connexion body, Worshipping in their church on Brock St., went into union with the North St. congrega- tion. so that the full organization of this congregation dates from the year 1878. Among the pastors be- fore 188 we have the names of Noble F. English, Richard Whiting, Wm. H. Poole, Wm. S. Blackstock, James Graham, W. C. Henderson and James Preston; and since, J. A. Williams D.
