It is fair to alumnae that ordinar dreams are vagaries of the mind, whe it is not pinned down to actualities by the sights, sounds and duties of every- day life and is ab the atone time sttra ulated by recolleations er ba DO sound or seneatii:um of the moment. But eve when awake, if one separates} biros:011 from his surroundings, dreams way be produced-day-drearas. If one lies dow ha a quiet place, making tbe mind a empty as poseible, the day dreams ar almost sure to enter into the vacancy. For instance, on suet& an occasion began to dream of tne sugar Imah where I made sugar an a boy. Then I thought of Hernando Cortez, who con- quered Mexico; thee of the Egyptia pyramids; then of Herodotas , then o the Cape of Good Rope, and then o the discoverv of America. It was perfect dream, with all the beemio incongruity which real dreams have and yet the chain at thought wa quite natural. As a boy I had read about Cortez while cooling auger. 11 had mentioned pyramids in Mexico. Th thought of pyramids suggested Hero dotus, who had written about the Nile, It has been implied that Rerodotu knew that Africa, had been circumnav- igated. This suggested the Cape o Good Hope; Vasco da Game discovere the Cape and that suggested the discov- ery of America. These facts may pos- sibly suggest that sosne connection ma exist between these different parts o a dream which seem a.bsoliately dis- connected. While I dreamed this da dream I was not conscious of the link which bound the arts together. HOW DREAIVLS ARE SUGGESTED. If au= ineongruous dreams come t us when awake, it is reasoiaable to in- fer that when sleep relieves the min from the trammels of earth our dream will be wilder and more unreal, as the are. I suppose there is no doubt that man of one ordinary dreams are suggeste by day thoughts,' although they ma be as remote from there as Herodotue and the pyre4ide are „from an Ala-, balms sugar buhh. Sometimes the con- nection is .so fine that it is impossible to detect it. But doubtless it exists. Tbe same uncertainty exists regard- ing dreams which are called prophetic. Of course all sensible men reject the superstition that dreams have mean - lugs; that, for instance, a dream of death foretells a marriage, or that a dreant of a snake is a warning against tseachery ; but it is not safe to ea that warnings are always absent from tiresome. That is another of the mys- teries. The newspapers every little while contain accounts of dreams giving warning of certain events, such as deaths, the ;discovery of mines, the de- tection of criminals and so on. I have Investigated some of them and found them untrue. Then there are histOr- ieal dreams of this kind. Calphurnia, for instance, is said to have had a dream warning her of Caesar' death. The Bible is full of premonitory dreatas. There are also some authenticated dreams of more recent origin, snob as the " Nimblefoot Mystery ' of 1870. THE NIMMEFOOT MYSTERY. In that year, Walter Craig, of Bal- larat, Australia, dreamed that his horse Nimblefoot would win the Mel- bourneXup and that the jockey *veld voter crape on his arm. Sure enough, Craig died soon after, and Nimblefoot won the flotham Stakes, With his Joc- key • in mourning. This drew public attention to Ile story and ratich epee - Madan meta indulged in to his chances in the Melbourne. But Nimble - foot wen that also, and so the dream Of prophecy was fulfiled. • In 1898 Alitanitt Won the Same. ottP, atter her victoryhad been Pretaged in a. dreera. /t was a king Quit, end the dreamer won SLOW for hitt wide* by Wane Of thi ghtetly • tip, But the 4reatia had also foretold his Mini death end he died before the rinea was rim. Sundays ago. says a aveller. At the close of the service a bell began to toll, and we were told hat a man had died. His funeral was about to take place. We joined a group of citizens who were, to go to • e funeral to offer sympathy to •and condole witb the bereaved. ' On the viay to the house of naourn- ng we were joined at intervals by more riandly persons with motives similar o ours, until our number increased, o fifty or sixty. When we arrived we muid hundreds of townfolk already • rading or etanding near and around e house. The raost noticeable thing was an • manse white tent, fringed with sear - et, pitehed amoug and over the trees: der which was a group of about fif- a woman of all ages with costumes of all colors and .representing nearly fashions, troM the primitive Syrian • *sant dress to that commonly in use in England. In the centre of tbe -glands Was the •ier, most gorgeously decorated and onninented with varioste lands of gay material, smite of which we afterward discovered consisted of real " LADLES' BEST DRESSES," borrowed for the occasion. All around e bier there was a great discord of shrieks, wettings, and crying. The.inunediate male relatives of the deceased stood in a line some distanee Mar the tent to rec, eive the sympathy am such as ourselves. Wheat our com- pany ,approathed we arrayed ourselves DJ a line paralell to theira and eight or en feet distant, and in chorue we said : -" Our will is with you It grieved no, it pained us. May health and peace attend the living. My God have mer - ay upon binx and spare you,'' ens. To this the relatives ret ttrned expres- sions of appreciation of our sympathy and wishedthat that Whioh was de- ducted from the dead man's dap; might be added to oar days. We then retired to Join the waiting ultitude and make ream for other condolers, who went through the same rm, Now antt then we could see big trays of lemonade and coffee passed among he newcomers. Some:of the condolers on their approach would start a chant apostrophizing the deettased. After 81X or seven hours the Priests resent donned their stoles and pushod heir way till:nigh the crowd- Lo the ter arid tentdilettel a preliminary ?aor- tae.
