PROPui02 OARTAGE AND FUEL OO. WEST UT. John Ss Platt, Facts From the. Evidence. How West Huron Was Stolen For The Liberal Party. The following ore some of the facts established by the evidence recently taken by the Committee on Privileges and Elections at Ottawa. They are undisputed and admitted by the defence. Let honest men, irrespective of party, say what they think of such methods : AT NO. 4 DIVISION, COLBORNE. 1. That at least 43 ballots were marked for Mr. McLean, the Conservative candidate, and banded to the Deputy Returning Officer. although but 30 ballots so marked were found in the box. 2. That 14 ballots marked for the Liberal candi- date, all initialed with ink -while the others were ini- tialed with penal,} -•-a11 in consecutive order and all igia ripd9d identically alike, were found In the ballot box; these were of different size and on different paper from any others raised at that poll, and did not corres- pond with any of the stubs left in the ballot book. The D. R. O. swears to this, but says he cannot explain it. 3. An expert from the Eddy Paper Mills proved that it was '• absolutely impossible" that these 14 balms lots should have come off these stubs; that they were not made or the same stock nor on the same machine. 4. Th9,1, there were FOUR Liberal scrutineers, although the l/ B only TWO. t pone of the scrutineers were sworn, although the law dt, ttLrequirpfs that they shrill be sworn. 0. That the Poll Clerk himself was NM SWQLN. 7. That the D. R. O. certified in apoll book that all these men were sworn, which certificate was untrue. 8. That one of the Liberal scrutineers acted as Poll Clerk while voters deposited their ballots, though be was not sworn to perform the duties of a Poli Clerk. 9. That L. E. Dancey, barrister, one of the Liberal ecru- titaeea•s, did not produce his authority to the Deputy Returning Officer, brit handed it to the Poll Oler,t during the afternoon, apparently with/ant the knowledge ot any other person, and asked the latter to put the paper in the poll book, 10. That Dancey never evep signed an oath. 11. That Dancdy was admitted to act as scrutineer while the ballots were being counted, although the Conservative scrutineers distinctly raised the objection that that gentleman had produced no authority whatever to act in such a capacity, AT NO. 2 DIVISION, COLBORNE. 12. Two forged ballots were taken out of the box, one of ' lllch the D. R. 0., Herbert Morris, had rejected, but the other he had counted for Holmes. The initials ha d.etlared forged., AT NO. 3 DIVISION, TOWN HALL, AQAER!CH. 13. The poll -book showed that 118 persons had vot- ed, but there were 123 ballots in the box, 21 of which are unquestionably bogus. Eleven ballots counter for Holmes were not initialed. 14. Thai poll Work and the Conservative scrutineer saw Darr, the now missing D, R. 0., tear up marked bal- lots. and when remonstrated with he said, "Oh, h '1, that's -nothing, there were plenty of them about poyyn yesterday r' 15. The p011 clerk cautioned Farr to be careful and attend to his business, Farr having boasted that "There are 13 d d good ballots in that box for Holmes r' 16. William Lane, the Election Clerk testified, after an ex- amination of the poll books, that the deputy returning officers accounted for 1413 ballots more than he supposed he had sent out to them. 17 D. McGillicuddy, who printed the ballots, swore that he had orders to print 0,150 ballots. hut he printed at least 1$,500,,. ''would not atl'ear there were not 7000 of them -there tntght have - been 10,000." 18. He had 300 ballots in his pockets when be went to Ottawa. 19. At leasttwo kinds of paper were used in printing -the bal- lots, but neither of them were of the weight or quality prescribed by the Election Act.. the paper used being from ten to 12 pounds lighter to the ream. Nor were they printed according to -the form throated to the Act, the counterfoil being at the left side of the ballot instead of at the bottom. 20. The packages of ballots wet e made up in the Signal office; the Election Clerk and Returning OMeer did not check diem over, but sent them out as they were received from the printing office, 1006$A9' (To he continued.)t,Qq P ► 1°l I►1•a The Story Of The Affectionate Elephant. (loon treat St ar,1 The most pathetic incident in con- nection with the West Huron election investigation was tine ludicrous blen- der made by Sir Louis Davies yester- day. The honourable Minister's solici- tude for Me. 13nhnes, who is tempor- arily oceupying Mr. McLean's seat in the House of Commons, has through- out the enquiry been comparable to nothing but, the affectionate anxiety of an old hen for her one chick. Re seems to have thought that the chock was in great peril Yesterday; the witness, James Nelson. swore that Parr had reformed him that. the night rafter the election a eertain person whom the witness named shook hands with Parr and said 'I will remember you for this, Parr,' Sir Louis object- ed to 'the name of an innocent third party being dragged in' and had the name struck out ot the record. Had Sir Louis lingered longer to meditate, he would have decided to let well alone, but. having ta4ken great pains to get the name off the record, he got it in again by calling Mr. Hol- mes to swear that his one couversation with Parr consisted of the brief re*• mark. "1 aur glad to meet yen," instead of the equally brief, "1 will remember you for this." We do not for a nun went question the aecnrney of Mr, Holmes' statement, but, the idea of in- t.roducing into the record a sworn de' nial of something that does not appear in the record is not a had bull, To stick to Karn yard metaphor, Sir Louis' solicitude nn this occasion wine like that of the affectionate elephant who found a nest of eggs only partly hatched, the mother hen having got NEW BOOKS FOR SCHOOL OPENING.
