PLUS -- /Eararg arion M cCharles About 150 citizens front Huron Township and Ripley, as well as interested people from Kinloss, Kincardine and Bruce Townships,., met last •Wednesday, December : • 13th at Ripley to .'ask questions and. discuss -the-pros-and coils-of'th proposed school board : of board over all, schools in•th county. D' • George MacLean, . Reeve of y Rip1 called the meeting:, to tone order And called on Murray Gaunt; M.:P..P..for Huron Bruce, to ex plain The proposed' plan on County School boards.'• Mr. Gaunt. said is far back as 1960 steps were taken as to a. prog- ram for setting up school boards for larger areas. In .1967 there are 1490 School boards in Ontario. and by 1969 it is hoped 100boards would. be running the schools of our Prov ince:. Reasons given were that people on' these boards' would be'_ employed full rime and equality of Education for rural' and .urban people alike' would, be better for the country. Many of the people. in,Ontario are or were uninformed of the change in the•school board ,situation. until • • the 'Premier made the Speech in November:. In, fact, it is yet to,be ironed out by. the Department of Education as,to, how this program ,can be carred out satisfactorily. Mr.: Gaunt felt that the people should have been better informed of what was 'happening and . said • the boards to be elected wouldn't represent all the people as larger "areas would most certainly have more say as to- who would be elect ed.. He felt the answer would be that. the Premier should know of the objections and an alternative an- swer. . , • MR X701 -IN SL;SHELL of as . '.card- • ine Townshi . , p kgd Why upoctors' hadn't felt it, needful to inform the people' Of the prograM _. . MR. GAL.NT said he too felt it would haw e been better had.. he _,people been told and not given u k such a go ahead in building new schools. MR. ELDON LOWRY asked what. advantage these new school boards and larger schools would be: MR. BUSHELL replied that. e- —perhaps-we should: study the bene= . fits and asked if grants.wouldn't be increased.: MR.. GAUNT -•said yes, Grants would be increased by 10°jo'but whose money would it. be* thaat would be used? 'NORMAN CLINTON of.Kinard- ine Town :said the schools we Al- ready had ,weren't' paid for, and what would happen to them. MR. GAUNT:. explained that it couldn't all be blamed on the Department, that the''people them- selves; asked; for. these Schools and in turn were granted per ssion, sim- ply meaning that the people them-' selves didn't.look far enough ahead. and that nowt 'there would probably be sortie white elephants WM. 'HARRIS'brohght up the.point of longer bus routes and more drop outs because of, this MRS. MARSHALL. in her jovial manner, received cheers and claps when she said "Let's get down to: earth by letting the Govnmknow. erent they are playing with our money and help use get out of debt insteid of in deeper," She Made a motion that • we draw bpa ' .petition in .thisregard B1LL'ARNOLD agreed we should come up w zh'i solution as well as a petition. Let some of the money go to build houses to make' better living con- ditions. He felt too that maybe we -should bring up from Toronto some of the people responsiblefor the larger :school areas,', and let them. ride the busses "On . -1 morning Iire `- Monday. past .or on,. a good stormyday is winter. MR. McFADDEN of Tiverton said he was sure the people in Tiverton hadn'tthought _up.:"the idea_of a.. -.. central school in Tiverton, for where could 1100 to 2000 pupils stay over night should a, storm come up in school hours, He felt that the government had been the cause of somany-.new schools being built in the last few years, ,with their increased grants., etc.. But • let us take ' a look at the larger' school and the one school board` per county,. It may; have its merits. MR. GAUNT agreeda thiscould be.:so and said we should have',` : known ahead though to be able to sttidy'the situation better..': • MRS. CECIL HOLLANDS asked if there was going to be this change' of boards and bigger schools why was there continued' building going on in our own areas? DON ARSCOTT, principal in Kin- cardine High School said that there was need for more students receiv- ing vocational training, alll the. time, ands that these schools were forced to add . more room He' felt there should be More schools *, offering vocational training as 96 .students from Port Elgin. 53 from Kincardine were attending Walker, ton and 40 from Ripley in Wingham and more should be going. IOHN C. MacDONALD asked if: it. had ever been estimated how many buses would' be ,needed_ by a County Board to take'children to a large Central School. •.
