BY REV. DUNCAN McTAVISH •
The first gramophone belonged to
the nineteenth century. It must
have. I started to school in the
spring•of.1896 and I am fairly cert-
ain it was at my first Christmas
concert. that I; was introduced to
this strange instrument It„beionged
to a farmer who lived east - Of the.
school, but whose children attend-
ed there: A bleeder of fine
shotthorh• cattle, he was. more
affluent' than, the •average men of
those days He. was a lover of
good music and had purchased the •
machine to regale himself from
time to time.
k.
It was a strange contraption.with:.
a huge horn and cylinder records
which were turned b y a motor.
mechanism hidden in; a • cabinet.
Needless to say, it caused a good
deal of excitement among young
and old. There were no "frills" in_
the field of education in' those'
days, . We had to sing . our choruses
without the aid of app organ or
piano, but in this way' we learned
to 'sing unaccompanied; :.something
that has*stood me in good stead
through life.
