Brice Hospital. Walkerton on Thurs
day, November 23rd, being admit-
ted to hospital only the day before.
She had; been a resident of Bruce
Lea Haven, Walkerton for the past
twenty some years. • •
Miss Bowker was born in March,
1894 and was. a resident of KinIoSs
Township, living just north of the..•

We.have ritten about several
treesof my boyhood days„):1:,.
perhaps•the most dramatic story of
all, is about an ash tree. Ittood'
Upon thehillside overlooking the
flats leading tothe road , like' a
lonely sentinel guarding the ram-
part. But every spring saw some
erosion as the bank tumbled into
the riier at high water until at last.
it hung perilously upont the edge Of
the river with some of its roots ex
• posed to/view, but enough of them
still in the hillside to keep it nour-
ished •
It happened On the first Sundayof
• July 1917. I was to preach My first
sermon fifteen miles away as a
. .
student minister. A terrible storm
broke loose toward morning and the
worst flood in history completely •
•inundated lOw-lying land. ,Culirerts
--and bridgei, were washed out 'and.
transportation completely
halted for manY miles back from
the.lake., I neVer made that .
appointment. 1 crossed over the
wooden bridge -on the Eighteen
'Mile RiVer and proceeded east until
1 came to what we called
"'ROulston's Gully":. There 1 met
with a washout of at least fifteen
feet deep and nearly atwide

As 1 came near the bridge I had
just crossed I could see this ash
tree coming down the river. It
stood.uptight as though it would
prove its vigor in its last final
plune,. It was within a few, rods
of the bridge as I approathed the
raging river. My horse, a nervous
creature, saw it corning and -began
to halt. ,A sharp cut of the whip
took his attention momentarily
from the tree, The next mirinte we
were galloping acrosi the bridge

down ppon us. As we cleared the
bridge I breathed a sigh of relief
and looked back't o see the tree,
still standing upright , hit the .
