A short distance :back from, the

stood .two lovely maple trees; .'They
are still standing there though, the
trunks °have grown to, a considerable.
size and their: foliage has spread in
all directions These • trees stand
there as, a monument to: a.: very ,.
wonderful young man whose mother
died 'when he. was a small boy and
a'grandmother who;took. ' him home
.to,raise. Fred.lofh grew to man-
hood with a burning desire to be-
come--a--mi rister-but-died-at-the,.
age 'of twenty-one. in. the year, :1888..
Fred was born- in the year of Confed
eration and must have planted the
trees some years before his death.
No doubt plans were underway for
the erection of the: frame house, to
replacethe old log home some
time before construction'took place
and Fred evidently plaYed a part by.
planting two' trees.
,As .aboy I• recall the :fine shade
•they. gave and underneath those . -
trees my little sisters held many .an
imaginary picnic and entertained
a good manyimaginary .friends •
while playing house beneath those
boughs.
From, one of the lower limbs was
hung the family swing in 'which
young life regaled ,itself..Climbing
among; the many limbs was a favor-
ite boyish pastime in a day long
before :we had heard of Tarzan.
Those twim, mapies have for me a
sort of monumental worth'. They
speak 'not. only of a young man
Whom I. never knew; but. heard.
.much of from, my father's lips..
They also mark the `last standing
thing, :aside froth the old, stone
cellar ;,on• which the house once
nested;` a house that speaks of happy
days when 'a family of father,
mother, three brothels and four
sisters' lived'together: Those eight •
children played and, fought togeth-
er just as every, large family did.
They laughed and loved as memb-
ers .of 'any family do::They possessed
very little of, material goods,, but.
they were given instruction- in. the
things that matter 'met. Loving
parents bequeathed to them those:
things'that money, Cannot buy;
things that thtough'the years have
eridured•and still do like the twin
