THE OLD ELM
BY :REV,, DUNCAN McTAVISH
it stood in what we used: to call
"The ',Upper 'Flats"', a. great tall
•giant elm. - a patriarch of the•torest
But the years were taking their toll,
and the evidence' of decay had -longe
since set in; Only a few top•,limbs
showed any signs of green leaves
upon them and a.great hollow pro-
.....
claimed death creeping up at the
trunk. It measured over seven feet
across at the bottom and there
was a'I opening, into which 1, had •
often crawled as a lad• and stood
upright.But we had been warned
not to indulge in.such'adventures
less a coon. should drop down. upon,
us from the hollow:up above;
Well, it was finally decided to
cut the old tree down. and make it
into summer wood. So one morning
armed' with 'a sixfoot cross -cut saw
some. axe's., and"a small metal wedge'
or, two, the task of falling the old. •
soft elm was'begun, We had to saw
around the rim of the outside as no
saw was long'enough to cut across
its diameter.But when we.had it
almost cut off, it stood there in its
stateliness as though it .refused to
yield . • It was• so erect and plumb `.
that 'the small wedges had no effect
whatever, So off we •hurried to the .
barn to secure a large iron wedge
used 'for splitting rails, 'hoping that;:
a gust of wind iou1d not come in
the meantime ;and send the ,old
tree in the wrong "direction.
Fortunately, nothing, like this happ
•ened.and with two large ;wedges "and
a.tnallett:to`drive .them in at the.
back, the oldgiant finailYYqyielded.
g
and went: crashing to the ground
So' dead and brittle was the top.
that ndt•a single limb•remai ied on,
the tree•.once• it had hit the ground.
There was no use trying; to manu
facture' the first fifteen feet into ,
wood. as the'outer shell was . far too,
tough to split.,'So 'leaving behind
that first long log,` we started .in to
cut, itinto 18 inch blocks When the!
task was over we had: seventeen
cord of wood from that one bid
tree' But 'is. disc . „ arance left a
.vacancy _that lingered long for •
those of us whb were used to seting
this grand old relic of a day that:
was passing.;'
