Uncertainty about the structural.
safety of the ceiling of the Grade 1,
room at Lucknow Public School
Caused the classroom to be closed
for two days;the first of this week
while workmen made repairs to,
"the
room in the 89 -year old school
building .
The picture 'shows the ;cell.
ing The hole at the corner was
made by workers in an. attempt to
determine the 'construction.
A:sagging in'the ceiling of the
:room , located on the north-west
corner of the 'school,
downstairs, had been visible 'for
some time but had been kept under
surveillance and was not cause for

However, on Friday afternoon a
section•of the•ceiling sagged with'
a noticable•noise and the teacher
Mrs ••:Robert'Campbell irn-mediat-
ely drew it to. the attention of
principal Stuart .Collyer • Dust was
visible on the window sill, created:
by the.drop in'the ceiling.
Advice on the.st:ructural safety of
the room was immediately sought'
and it was decided:.that'repairs to
the ceiling'were necessary. School

screwing 8". lag screws through the
ceiling and.into the foist: This
measure' lifted• the ceiling back to:;
its. original position and..assured
complete/safety for the room full

The old scienceroom in the high
•
school had been located above the
grade,1 room and. the pipes from
the, science desks had been remov
ed some •years ago:. Many of these;
came down through the grade 1
Ceiling and it is thought thatthis
might
have weakened the structure
•
The school was built in 1818 and..
•
was completely remodelled in 1925
It has undergone.many'periods.of
Modernization since.: that time.
