When I was a boy, mylatlier • •:
*always wore long leather boots
thateame up almost to his knees..
:These boots. were well' greased with
lalloW that kept therri sat. and •
pliable and added greatly to their
water resistance. Indeed, great— •
ing father's boots was almost a
ritual in our house.
This footwear presented one •• •
problem - that. of •removing then'
when the day's work was done. It
was much, easier to pull them on •
than it was. to pull them off. Yet,
as a small boy, one of my chief
delights was to straddle a er s
extended leg and with hands clasp-
ed tightly on the boot around' the
'heel, yank it off his foot. One '
suspects that a proud father took
.sOme delight in watching his
O eldest son struggling 'in this way, ,
and aided' and, abetted him With
due pressure froin behind..
But Dad was independent of his
son's assistanceor anyone else's, . •
for that, Matter. He kept in a
handy placea mechanical device:

particular task. It consisted of a
small piece of wood, wider at the
