THE MILKHOUSE.
BY REV. DUNCAN ' McTAVISH
The milk; house formed. an' im
portant: unit • in the dairy equip
ment of pioneer days.. It preceded
the period of stone cellars ;under.
thehouse and within its walls
there were housed the churns, the,
butter bowls and ladles and .the •
old fashioned. milk pans .stretched
out upon its earthen' floor: Into
these pans the freshly. strained '.
Milkwas'deposited:so that the •
cream;might find its way. to.the
top,. to be skimmed off by ,large
tin•ladles which were filled with
Boles to let the'.skim: milk :drop
through. In this way'thecream
was gathered -and made ready for
churning,
Milk houses.,were •usually low .in
.height and the first log or two •
'Might .be below the., ground level.
in order to add`to the'cooiness on'
•hot summer days. One small win-''
dow served to give a'limited
amount of light. But the whole
purpose of the building was to furn-
:ue 3r; ish insulation from'the outside and;
:..en cal help preserve.the cream.

`We had, a milk house on the old
farm. It vias situated at the back of
the house and a short distance to
the west from the, door 'that • led, to
Grandmother's part • of the home.
The walk leading to it sloped down-
ward from the back steps and atone
time it, was Grandmother's .cellar I,J
suspect it was put there, to give her,
certain quarters Of her own so .that
the cellar under•the main house •
might be the special property of my
mother, thus avoiding tin ecessary
clashes.`
With the passing; of Grandmother,
its use changed and it•became
storehouse: It had an• attic Into
which light things were put, 'biit in
the lower part you Might "find al-
most anything.
In the summer our .bandsleighs•
were kept there and the old wood-
en Sap troughs stored with other
equipment from the sugar' bush..'1
remember it chiefly for the build-
ing where as small children we
used it for; playing • " Ante , ante
over'..• It being low down, -we
Small children could heave the
ball over its roof to the other side
quite easily. And when fror •'the
other side we heard the cry that
indicated tte.ball had been caught
there:iaas the usual scrambling of
that old time game.. :
