}n TME CRADLE
.
• SY' ' REV.. DUNCAN McTAVISH
Before the reaper came the cradle
and before the cradle, the sickle,
as a tool for the harvesting of grain
But the cradle was the first impleni
ent designed for binding the.cut.
grain into sheaves, It had a scythe,
much: like he common scytheof
those early days. But coupled with
it was a set of wooden fingers that
gathered the :stalks of grain as they
fell -underneath the cutting -blade.
As the cradler swung his instrument
• around, 'he deposited the grain' in•
what was known as a swath. Care
had to be taken to flip the straw
off ,the fingers at• the proper, angle,.
otherwise raking and bidding' could
• become' a difficult task. It was
this:partioular art that. distinguish
ed a good cradler from a poor one,:
My father .always cradled out •the
corners of the field before going_in
with' the binder so'that good grain''
would not betrampled unduly on •
the ground 'and wasted.. His son
raked up the sheaves and' bound
them. Hesoon found the knack of
• flipping grain.to make a tidy swath
and 'when he' undertook for the,, first.
...time to swing the cradle on a
rough 'hillsid.e, his fattier was °
surprised by;his.skillful craftsman-•;
ship. ,,
• .The. cradle was the only •
instrument for cutting grain' for
binding, on new land that was being
cropped for.,the first ;tittle. Usually
the. ground •was too tough to use
either.r'eaper or binder until at:least
• one crop:had been gathered in`.. As
a lad I,.have seen:rty fattier
swinging the cradle day after, day
acrosethe' k tolls of *some• virgin soil.
to tie followed by someone who rak-
-ed ,up -the sheaves . and bound them.

• INTENDED FOR/EARLIER ISSUE ::
The grapevine (Liberals who
don't want their names , mention-
ed) has told us that:the''Channel 3
affair is over. Jack Pickersgill` ..
will not:sign the piece of paper
that would make it legal -for. Snel
grove and his associates to move
the Barrie TV tower closer to Tor,
onto.
It's a sure bet that' the. Cabinet has
discussed this whole;. business, and
they realize that it •would be polit
icalsuicide :if they'did ''any .thing
to interfere with the reception of.•
the, two Buffalo channels in the:":
Toronto area
So; ifour information is correct.
and the tower, move will not take '
place, there is.no reason for Dennis
Braithwaite, the Globe and Mail "
TV columnist, and Geoff Stirling
of Channel 3, to get::into a debate..
As it stands now, the big .debate , .
(which could only end in disaster
for Stirling: and Snelgrove) is sehed-
uled for • September 19th at 10 p.m.:
on ",The Public Eye"-. ` •
So, let's end this affair, it was all
a mistake. Sneigrove should never
have applied to•move his tower
Closer to Toronto. The B. B G
should • never have sanctioned it
And the Cabinetcotild.have spent'

the pros and cons of moving. a TV.

Latest on the Channel 3 Barrie
affair: The Cabinet. is supposed to
hand the controversy back intOthe

reported 'to be planning to leave
the Cabinet to become the first
president' of the Canadian Trans-
por`t`Commissior, a .still -to -be;

Parliament . last winter ;.
How's that for side-stepping the .
issue?' While the B. B.G.: ''tackles the

quit the Cabinet and take .this new .i.
post. /The Prime: Minister will•then•

How's that for getting off the, hook
