I must confess that ,I find a tendency to shrink. from this reptile, however harm:-. less; I am told itis. But I could hardly write of that "Old Swimm- ing Hole" and not r ecall one visit. of a water snake to. its. haunts,':. Only once, did I see, a snake any- where near the place, but I can assure rny. readers that its presence: there on that•occasion gave no special pleasure to those of us who witnessed its performance. I , think for most of us; 'the presence of any reptile fills us with a sense of horror and sometimes fear and I . have never had any desire to fon- dle the snakein the way some folks --do. Rightly ' or wrongly, 1 prefer to.keep away from theni and a visit front a serpent is enough 'to ,- spoil my.Garden of Eden under'. most any circumstances. . It was a bright sunny' day in mid---. summer. Wehad ,'been swimming . in the hole and were enjoying the sunshine on the:, bank, when we. spotted a; snake across on.the other side, nestled in the weedsand.' grasses. Motionless , : we sat :.there. watching as it Waited ,in the waters seeking -out its prey Suddenly it ,leaped• from the water and engulfed: a small, frog that sat at the' water's edge exercising lungs as best it could. In an instant . the frog had disappeared down the snake's • gtllet and now it was, careening across the hole in that strange, stroke peculiar to 'a reptile in water.. It .was heading toward the; three .of us who' stood watching and waiting to -give it anything but . a. gracious welcome • - -One swing at its head as' it. hitthe shoreline and it was out cold..
