HE SCENES OF
Y CHILDHOOD
"How dear to my heart are the
scenesof my, childhood ,
When fond `recollection presents
them to 'view .
' The orchard , 'the:, meadow, the
deep tangled wildwood
And every loved spot,. which I
infancy. knew "
So' ran the old poem in one•'of the'
English Readers ina day' that has

was a poem I loved in my boyhood."
days, and set to .music, ;it .
becalm, one of the folk,:songs: 'of
the late ,nineteenth, century
Some tim'e'ago'the lines and
music; carne back to me, and as I
meditated upon them, I got. the,
idea of writing.these articles. My.
mind went•back'.across the years.,
,recalling some, of the scenesof my
,childhood; scenes that helped 'to
.-.
.fill in a life that I•suppose would
be regarded as dull'and prosaic' in•
an age that tries 'to put men on the
moon. But may.I assure my.readers
it, was"not so". To -those of us who.
"were children in those days, life
had its adventures and homeyexp
eriences that gave zest to the bus-: •

cal project, I have written this
series on "The Scenes of Ivly
Childhood."
Rev. Duncan McTavish.

'On the.top,of'the hill::a few rods
west of the horse -in :which I was'
reared, there was a sandpit in ' .
which as a wee lad I spent many a,
happy hour ..The house was built
the. year that I, was born.. and•when.
CHEMICALS the time .came to plaster it, all
my 'father had to do was to dig a
-r
:41116i little pit where sand for;plastetng.•
Could be found in abundance.
Years after, the pit still rerriained
there' aria with the imagination of
a small boy, I set up a thriving
business, • ..
I constructed a small.' grist , mill',
Patterned after the one I went to
with my father where wheat was
made into flour and later transform,
ed by my,mother's skillful hands,
• t,into bread forhungry."nnouths,, The
structure Was simple; a little ex
cavation`in the side of the bank, a'
shoring up of the surface with a '
few small boards and the, frame

work, was complete. The interesting
thing about it was three tiny holes
made in the sod over the top. ,Into'
these holes I 'placed three .types of
screen taken from' the ;old fanning;
One was coarse, d_____Lyetond.
:medium,and the third real fine...~
Over these holes,I builta hopper
into. which•''I poured from time to
time pails of sand which latera filt
ered , through the `.screens .. ,
Underneath I rigged three bins to
catch the sand in its varied ,grades
as it filtered' through. The fine was
the flour used forbaking, the sec-
ond, was slightly coarser and it was
,supposed to be the 'shorts which I •
had seen taken home inthe grist.
The third was the coarsest of all
and in my boyish. imagination I
thought of it as the bran, which
came;; from the outer part of the
t
whey
Lookingkernel back, ,I .know .now that It
could; never be called a Rolling
•,
.
Mill as we didn't Y
have 'an rollers,'
Indeed we didn't need them as the
sand required no crushing. But
many a .happy hour was spent in
that sandpit with younger members
