Revolver Was Hander When Buying Cattle
In The ilderness Many YearsAgo
BY STEVE STOTHERS...
Sandy Hackett of L'ucknow was.
telling us an interesting story of
seventy years 'ago. It happened in
I,ucknow in 1894 or 18d5 which
was , we. believe, the "worst. crop
year ever known in this area. •
Crops were all in and doing well
but inearly June we had a ruinous
frost followed by extremely dry
'weather-, . People .of this .centur:
y,
would hardly believe' how poor the
• crops• were . •
•
: As a'result .when. winter' came
there was not enough feed for the.
cattle: Farmers' were forced to sell'
.their cattle at distress prices:'
M any -young cattle were sacrificed
at less than $10.00 per head. The
writer' 'remembers coming in with
a 'drive' of cattle sold by the neigh .
bars along the road, It seems.. ,
several carloads were sold;to Some
Americans. On delivery day, loads
ofcattle were loaded at the station
for,shiprnent°'to the Statex. '
As Sandy .tells it there, were two
men who. sat ata table stacked. with
American•money Theyhad -.things .:
organized so .that they paid off •
every half hour. Among the items.
on the table'of money was an
actual revolver apparently loaded.'"
We suppose the buyers thought they
were. buying in the wilderness' and
took this precaution, .
