LETTER TO THE;: EDITOR
Lucknow Resident: Questions Wisdom In
Statements By Agruc. Minister reene
Lucknow Ontario.•:
March 13, .'1967.
The ' Editor,
Lucknow Sentinel.
•Dear Sir
May 1 be permitted to express my,
personal opinion t :as• briefly as
possible, on some topics that have
been in' the news lately and about
which most people have read:
Issues which are definitely going to
. affect town and: country:life.
(1). Mr. Greene. Dominion Mini-
. sten of Agriculture. stated in the,.
House of Commons; that 'the•
increaser in' fani machinery is not
•irresponsible. This is•very
disappointing 'ma great many farm
ers,• I have'also noted by a press
report that International Harvesters
profit in 1065.• $75 .million net
after taxes, •represented 9.3•per ,
cent net income on investment and
the ':$88 million 1966' profit a 10.6
;per cent net return:, Meanwhile.•
. J. I`, Case in 1965, 1966 realized.
respectively a 14.5 and 23:.1 per.
cent net'teturn on Investment:
Apparently the shareholders must.
get first .consideration and the far-
mer last. I also thinkit very un
' fair•of the big manufacturers to
treat their thousacnds and thousands
•'of customers in,this'manner& Just
how can Mr. Greene justify his
statement? Iwwi11 say,no more
about this as the readers will hear
plenty about this subject in the
near future.
'(2) According to a press report at
a recent meeting in •Exeter Mr,•
Greene said and I. quote one of
the problems .f acing the industry is
still the .farmer with 10 to 26 cows
who is not running an efficient op-
• enation; Am I correct in stating
,that Mr. Greene •has taken '
exception to what is considered a
small dairy herd? I agree' that cer-
tain farm buildings need repair'
but if such, drastic action is taken
as'suggested by the ,govern;inent,
forty `per cent of the farmers will
be forced to' go out of. the
dairy business.

(3) In a speech of Mr. Greene's
read brhis deputy minister to ttie
Association of Rural Municipalities
it was stated and I . quote, "I
expect the number of farms to be
reducedby one half, the number
'of farmers decreased by seventy
per cent andthe increase in capi-
tal to be two and a half times.
' what it is. now, in 1980". .
Therefore in thirteen years, it
appears. the country will be a des-
olate looking place with many'
empty housesand ruined buildings,
As for the towns and 'villages, just
how many merchants can afford tc
lose approximately half their.
customers? If •this happens we'll
have ghostly, looking towns and
villages. In my opinion we are
being. pu%hedtoo fast and in the
wrong direction.,
