"What is going to happen to
small municipalities in the coming
years?" was a question posed by.
Reeve George. Joynt in his: ,inaugur
.al address to village council : on .
Tuesday night of•last week. •The
Reeve'sees a trend to a large :town
:nucleus which has been Muth in
'evidence in recent years and was '
brought tothe attention:of .rate-
payers here this, past .year by the .•
loss' o?•the high school.:
Much talk of, central 'government
• ,would •make it harder for small
.towns like Lucknow to continue 'to
exist.' Small centres, are being
gobbled up through government
:movements and The Reeve forsees
a 'future trend to straight resident
•ial'propertie's in smaller areas,with
residentscommuting to larger
centres,for. employrnent and
education.
Mr. 'Joynt went .on to say that • it
was up to the Federal and Provin-
cial:,governments .to look forways
to assist municipalities.in slow
,growth areas such as We have in
: this district Mr. Joynt' has been..

Western Ontario'whohave been
working in this regard; H e. feels
that the designated area status
created by government has: not
worked out, and :has become a
political football '
Speaking of the future for Luck
now, Mr. Joynt feels that,the
'village ids much better off than
other communities ,,of the same
size and even ' larger in 'this area..
.
He said council has carried:.on an
aggressive;planof improvement in
•. recent years and that many of•the
long g Pro range programs will be a few
gr.
years yet before they are domplet
ed., ,He., felt Lucknow..has received
,. good progressive government, and
with a continuation" of this;, •the,
future 'is bright for the.comniunity.'
Speaking;on'sewers for the villi:
age, the Reeve said "Sewers will
have to sit
until, we can see a
movementof, industry our way,: We
can''tafford sewage'atpresent as it
would discourage our new resident-
ial growth; which'has been steady"
Lucknow's. residential properties

position to go ahead ;with all the,
Planned work., ,Reeve Joynt said;
this, past year was the roughest' so '
' • far as finance was concerned.
Reeve .Joy,nt outlined further pro-
jects in Lucknow in thecentenn

Lucknow's image of "the council
with the forward look"
Some of tlie;1967 plans include a
continuation of the road program.;
new hydro' poles and rebuilding of

said, "No. 3 well is a dud and we,
have gone as long as we can

Improved lighting will be placed;
on Stauffer•and Ross Streets.
Motions included the .approval

Of Lucknow's share in the proposed
arena renovation which will, be
jointly'paid for by West Wawan'-

Council centered in to an ,agree-
ment
greement With the Lucknow Agricult
ural. Society in regard to' payment
of 'entertainment for Saturday
evening of the, Fair weekend,
September.15, 16. Although dis
cussion. was only in general terms,
.it was suggested that,a ' headliner'
for Saturday night would be'a top
name rock and roll band .which
would play :for dancing,,following
the beauty' contest. It was: agreed
that rather than run two separate
occasions during, centennialyear,
that the council ,would 'work with
the Agricultural.:Society in mak-
ing this weekend a "big one"
Suggestionsfor the type of:Cent-
ennial 'celebration are presently
being sought and: letters to the
editor'would,:be welcome onithis
subject. Your opinions, could
assist council and the agricultural
society in promoting this: weekend.
