Kids are great
y heart aches 'for .the. par
of young: children. All the
ents of all young : children.
y are, like :soldiers who. have
e ' their basic training,;. but
e never heard a. shot fired
anger. The': real war lies
d.
know there are some your
ers 'with several children
think they are going
ugh ' a rough' time Purge-
.
But this is merely purge-
. Hell comes later, and is
er. .
the kids, are. lovable. As ba -
they . are soft and. warm
if changed frequently,
11 good. They : grin, . they
p, • they, gurgle, and . they
p, and every day, in 'every
they 'grow : smarter and
er... •
e is .full' of. landmarks: tate
tooth, the first step; the
word, ` the first ,fist -fight
the little• girl next door,
first day at school; the first
crush on a member of the
site sex.
ey're very funny ; and
're very sweet. And there's
ys a bit. occasion not far
. ; There are ' Hallowe'en
mes :to make,' : and the
1 of that first , time out .in
eerie Optober night, one
clutching. a huge •'•paper
the other clutching, firmly
hand of the • bigger girl
next door, as the.rounds•
made.
ere's Christmas coming,
the growing excitement of
and the part In . the •Sun•.
School pageant, and rustley
r in elosets, and. the 'hair.
g help they give' in dec-
g the tree. •
grow, ' their , parents shrink.
Physically,; mentally, spiritual-
ly.,
piritual-ly. , And .financially.
The tendons' of the' family
body begin.to. stretch,' under;,
constant pressure. The family . ,
joints begin • to . creak, under
constant strain: Not to labor
Young the analogy, let's just say that
your cherubs have become
teenagers: .
Momma's tolerance , thins
with the samerapidity, as Dad's•
hair; Daughter's '`•.lippiness in-
creases at; the same rate as
• son's surliness. '
• ' What was once merely an ex-
ercise in exhaustion getting
• them- to bed becomes a su-
perhuman effort ' --': staying up
till they get. in.
But this is just the home life,
something to be borne; like in.
grown toe -nails, or varicose ,
veins. What really grabs.,you.is
the influence of the outside
••world.
Everybody, from the prime
minister to the local' plumber,.
tells ' yourkids they have to.'
stay in school. It doesn't matter •
• whether they have the brains
of a. louse. A drop-out, these
.. days, is practically a felon., In
fact, don't be surprised if all
drop -outs are sent .tothe moon,
as soon as we have established
a colony there:.• • .
Similarly, your daughter has
an irresistible attraction toward'
hood's. Vainly, you nudge her in
the 'direction of stone clean-cut,
honor -student son of a wealthy.
WASP doctor.. Her reaction?
"That fink!" '
And she makes a date with
some long -locked, Yamaha -rid-
ing character who is in : his
fourth year in the two-year
technical course, Makes' $25 a
week in his part-time jobat the
super -market, probably drinks,
and will be . rich by the . time
he's 25. •
3.. And your son? Same only
• moreso. He looks on LSD with
the same interest with which
%you looked' on, the Literary,''So.
cial and Debating clubs when
you were his age. He . helps
himself to a beer with the same
nonchalance with. Which he
used to take a banana.
But cheer up, parents.
There's one satisfaction. If you
can hold out, physically, you're
going to be able to sit around
and laugh youirself silly when
your kids are bringing up their
kids.
d there's Valentine's Day,
the great social decisions
made, about who gets the
ent, one and who gets the
nt one. And there's Fire
er Day, when they have to
in' a circle and watch
father, burning his fingers
scorching his eyebrows
he shows them how care-
ey must be:
in all, little kids are'
the greatest single bless -
e can. find in .this vale of
• They're a laugh' a' day.
can make you 'feel big;
strong, and capable, and
and whole.
re's only orie thing wrong
little kids, Inevitably,
rably, relentlessly, they
°'big kids, And as' they.
