THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW.•ONTARIO M1EQ1lESDAX, APRIL Mho I
To tucknow :Sentinel,
Lucknow, Ontario,
Dear Don;
. My interest was aroused by last
week's, article 'and picture of a
finelooking boy, with the fame
iliac name of David Stroud, of
Chinook Montana.: You have re-
equexted any information regarding
this family which nae has•pass--
ed , off the local stage so far as •
. Ashfield is concerned. '
Mymother grew up with the'
1. pioneer family of Strouds, there.,
were a number of boys. and:•some
,;girls.' : "I personally knew David
Stroud of the .first generation who
began and later returned to the
old..home farm which 'you refer
to in•the article. From there he;
moved to the Tiverton area out .
from <Kincardine. When hisfam-
ily started going to school, they
' ofcourse attended the. old Zion
school where I: got my elementary
. . education, located outon the
twelfth concession. I cannot say
if David of the firstgeneration
ever went to the original Zion
.school but he did attend school -
on the'twelfth.
• t week's issue; we carried''
a story about; a young boy from
Chinook, Montana, who was
seeking a pen pal from. the Luck.
now school, His name' was David
Stroud and -he said in his letter
that his grandfather carne from - '.
this area.
Thearticle has caused much
interest among "native sons and
daughters". ;who are familiar with
the Stroud name as having belong-
ed to. the Ashfield area..
'Mrs. Sam Gibson, the former
•Essie Ritchie,' recalls, going to
school with members of the Stroud
family who.resided on the 12th of.
Ashfield at` that time. She recalls
them moving to the Dan Nicholson
place on the boundary;and then
across the road where Russ Button
It is"interesting to note that the;
Anderson Side .road as it was '
calledin',earllierdays supported
the following families;. on the vest
•,.sid'e were the -Andersons, Nixons, .
.and Strouds, and on the east side,
z w the Irwins, Reids, 'and Tookes.
-Half of those "names are still 'ass-
ociated with the'`farms taken out: ,
by their forbearers.
As anyone can recall who were
around forty or More years ago, '.
the Anderson sideroad': provided
some prettyformidable snow drifts
in the •winter. The Pioneer gen- '
eration• fortunately had one ting
in their favour and that was'
numbers, ' all 'of which must• .
have been a helpin breaking ••;' ,.
trail through, to school. I suppose
the memory of plunging through._
the old sideroad prompted David
Stroud of the second generation
to .move' over to the twelfth of
Ashfield purchasing the, farm west
of A'Ritchie;,; This farm was
bought from a Webster family and
• later sold•to the late`Wm. Ritchie
When David sold this farm he
moved' back to the old homestead
farm. which he in turn sold to Dan
• Nicholson when he bought 'quite a
large holding :in the Tiverton area,
where he spent the rest of his act'
ive.life,.:
•
This David Stroud had three girls
and two boys. The girls were
Verna, Gertrude and•'Mary, .whi1'e
the.boys)were Bill and David•Well-,1
ington or D. W. as he was 'usually
culled . The girls are all married
diving in the. London area, while
Biel lives around .Tiverton, and
D.W.
live.s here in'Drillia. In
discussing this article rfith"•Dave;
he advises that the bots referred' to
in the article is a°decendant of one'
of his uncles who had 'lived; in the
.lUncaidi ie -Tiverton area before
going 'west. , .
Although the group. picture on the
same page was taken the same_
year "as I was Married, I can recog,-;
size the following by name, ,Mrs,
John Button; Mrs,, Johnston, mother
of Robert (former Lucknow reeve),
• Aunt Lizzie Webster as she was
affectionately called 'by everyone
in the community; Mrs. Geo.
Andres , Itucknpw's grand old lady
and her mother Aunt Flora; several
other Maces have a familiar look
• but I cannot get the names.
These human interest stories add
much to the old town paper which
we look forward to with great
anticipationeach week.
