Satisfied Farmer p les To Open Letter To Minister ' LETTER TO THE EDITOR': Dear Sir , • In reply to the letter published in your paper March 2 1966, 'add- ressed'to the Minister of'Agricult-• ure, I would like to express my • • • • The letter was headed 'Voice of the farmers'. Itcould very well be the voice of some farmers but, I am sure that it certainly doesn't concern all the farmers. ,As I see it,' the farmers have never seen it so good, with faun.- prOduce.prices at all time highs, .1 a new .social security'plan, com- pensation for all farm labour and a new. medical insurance scheme.. If these farmers must go around ''begging with theirhats in their • hands', it is their own fault. The reason they are doing this is be- cause they have bitten off more' than they can chew!' Most 6f these farmers have five times as much as they can handle. They, have — enough land.and 'machinery for -• - three farmers instead of one; Ther-' • efore, it is keepingthem busy • paying off their •intere-st,• let alone their principle. Then when Moth- er Nature spoils things, the press- ure becomes a little higher. Some of these farmers,. of course, would be well-off today if the weather had co-operated but I think prob- ably•,Mother Nature had her own: • gpod masons. • ' 'These So-called big operators . want just two things. Firstly to get rich quick by controlling.half the bounty: Secondly, they want to put on a big shdw with bright shiny new BIG tractors and,other.. machinery. :These things .now -a - f• days are balled status -symbols. If these farmers (big operators) had used their heads and kept their farms a normal size, they would have their hats on their • 'heads not in their hands; ' • • The. picture looks as ilthese farmer's' want the honourable Mr. Stewart to convince the govern? ment to pay for a irlistake made • by themselves, • • • The 30,000 farmers who had to .leave their land each yearwould, , in most cases, be still there, if they hadn't been .so eager io get. rich quick and, become big °per- ' ators. • • • • The fellows ,farming who remain an average size and keep thing paid far are going to win the race • • just like the old turtle did. Therefore- we shotild be thankful for what we have and try not to , put on.suCh a big front. • • • ?Ours truly, . • A SATISPIEt) FARMF12. • ' • WEDNIODAY,', Waal, 9th, :I • FXCLUSIVRI REALLY SAVE Highland Pride Coffee Pound 79c REPEAT, BY REQUEST SAVE lOc 'Home' Orange Juice Carton 39c HEINZ OR AYLMER TALL 48 OZ.
