REPORT FROM
QUEEN'S PARK
by Murray Gaunt, Huron -Bruce
Treasurer Jaynes Allan confirmed
this week that Ontario will, have
the use of $20,110,000 from the
February operations of the Canada
Pension .Plan forvU.niversity, and
School construction loans.
He 'pointed out that a Crown Coc-
.poration will be established to
lend,.money.to municipalities and
school boards", for school construct-
ion in. the same 'manner that the
universities capital aid •corpora-
• tion makes loans to universities,
• Ontario will be able to :borrow
the money from the, .• pension plan
fund this month at an interest rate
of .5.29 compared with 6 3/450 on
the bond market, ' Itwill be 'lent
to the universities and municipal-
ities at close to the rate at which
it borrows, but the rate will vary
from month to month
The' saving to municipalities
taking Into consideration that sch•
ool construction costs will be
about $100,000,000 this year,
and the fact that this money can
• now• be -borrowed for roughtly `Ke
less, will be $1,000,000 across
the province.
This week saw the end of the,
estirnates on Reform Institutions
and -the beginning of the Highway
estimates. , Total ,spending for the
Dept, of Highways will 'reach
$313,265,000.
The throne debate saw George
Peck, (P.C. Scarborough Cgntce)
ask his government to consider
an auto insurance scheme similar
to Medicare.
If the Insurance Underwriters
are not prepared to offer car insu- .
ance to all, the Government
should; stated Mr. Peck, adding
that car insurance is, as much a
right as medical insurance.
He urged the government to
-appoint a Select Committee as a
step toward curing a problem that
is growing more serious every Year
for a great many of our citizens
