can do is :skate like hell. And be-
cause of his speed afoot he's been
assigned to "shadow"the• Chicago..
.1/lack, Hawks' swift, high -scoring
forward Bobby' Hull five times over
the last two seasons'when Hull was
on sccing sprees;
• And nor/IL , aside from his' defenr
ive achievements, he's finally be-
ginning to blossom: as a scorer,
He's tall (5-11) and moderately.
heavy (175) fora wingman, but'.
he's never done much well in the
'NHI,.except skate and bang the_
oppositionaround. •
' PATJL IS' BOB.BOB. BQBBIN• ALONG
• "1 :work'on . it all the time" Hen=
derson .admits, "but I just don't'
handle the: puck, well' enough.. • It
bobbles along in front of me : I'rti
like a man. killing snakes when I ..`
try to carry it. ' '.•
That comes from never`having
to be a bi'g'stick-'handler. Even in
grade school back home (Lucknow ,
Ont). I was the fastest kid on any
team, , So all the coaches would.'
do was put,me with a' center who.
could feed and I'd tear for the net.
"I had a good. shot in high school
and Junior Leven'. So by the time
'I got .to Junior A hockey I was.
pretty far behind as. a puck -carrier.
Red: Wings' scout Jimrny Skinner
got a line. on .Henderson while• he
was still in Lucknow, And ,arthe
age of 17:.Skinner signed him to a
contractwith the Hamilton•Red
Wings.. Inhis .first year at Hamil-' `
ton Henderson scored .49•goals in
48 games a team.record' which •
still stands:..i '
The next . year he went: to Pitts"
burgh, thhen came up to the Wings
a
t mid-season. He' s never been
back to the minors, , `
.rust' before his bigyear at Ham-
ilton, though, Henderson decided
to quit, hockey_,. get a: collegede
gree and.teach; histo y.. But Skin -
tier talked• him out of it • a 'piece
;of persuasion;'for: which Abel should
°be thankful this;rnorning.;, sx
"1 heard about Skinner's talk
with Henderson and the kid's .par-
ents two years later," Abei•coz .
fessed. "I"didn't know how good:
he was then and I didn"f'care .
"1 just wanted to get out," Hen-,
derson said: "It was the summer" '
of 1962. I. didn't think I could
'ever make it.in the big time."
HULL'S: PATIENCE OK 'WITH
• HENDERSON . • •
That yearienderson went on to '
• score the 49 goals at Hamilton.
And to'find- out what it -is 'like to
be shadowed. "Everybody put
their fastest skater on Me that year
'and it almost droveme crazy," ....
, Henderson explained. ' "1 hit one•
kid rea, l. hard and . took another .one'
into the boards and broke•his shotr
lder. . .
"So last year. when Sid decided
that 1 should .shadow Hull 1 was
really worried. 'l knew how 'guys
could react to:having sotheone on: •
them ail 'the time;
"I'll say this; Hull is real good •
about it; I >really don't know • hovt
he takes it, I'just get close to him
every time he gets the puck and
stay right on him. 'I've done it' ;'
,five times - twice this year, -and'
he's only :scored :one goal.while I:
was •shadowing him. ,
"Gordie Howe ... I wouldn't•
shadow him. He doesn't have the
patience Hull lies.
> Henderson is the ideal player
for a team like Montreal.
"He can skate," says, Skinner'•
"an'hhe.has that stuff inthe stom=
ach :... you know, he doesn't,
mind running into somebody. Hull
is strong and he can hold .off most
,players. and shoot with his free
hand
"But Henderson is wirey and he
•leans on him pretty hard
P Y
'Abel says it 'another .way: He
doesn't•hear those footsteps•behind,
him;: In. fact, if anybody hits him
he looks for someone to hit."
Last year Henderson scored only
eight goals in a fall. 70 games
But •we could tee that he would
improve," said Abel .:" He's 'not : •
another Gordie Howe . But"he cou-•
ld be a. star,like;Norni .Ullman
"Who knows?"
