MONTREAI. LIVE VE STOCK
MARKET.
There were about 920 head of buchers'
cattle, 700 sheep 'and lambs, 20 calves
and 140 fat hogs offered at the East End
Abattoir on Monday. The numbers of
cattle that day were much larger than
were ever before offered on this market„
except at Christmas and Easter, and
the drovers were compelled to sell at
lower figures than on any previous
market this season and a large number
could not be sold. Several addi-
tional droves were held at the yards and
not brought to the market. Very
few sales were made at over Sic per lb.,
and pretty good cattle sold at about 3c
do„ common stock at 24c to 3c do., with
lean beasts and hardlooking bulls at
about 2c psi: lb. There were no good
veal calves offered, though there were
several ;large calves on the market, that
were rather too old for veal and too
young for beef. Prices are pretty high
considering the quality. The supply of
mutton critters was fair and prices are
without change, except that there was a
better demand for good large sheep to
ship to Britain, and these brought from
$5 to $0.50 each, or from 4c to 44e per
lb. There were about 500 fat hogs on
sale to -day at the various yards and
markets, but there was an active de-
mand for them, and prices continue
without change, or from G4c to (iic per
lb. for fed hogs and 7c per lb. for those
just from off the cars.
-TORONTO LIST. STOCK.
There were forty loads of live stock
on the western cattle market here on
Wednesday, including three loads held
over front last week. The common
grades, were -dull and easier. Lambs,
calves and hogs steady. There was a
fair supply let butchers' cattle, but a
large proportion of them were of only
medium quality. Good average loads
were in demand at 31 to 31c, while
picked were worth 3$ to 4c. Poor stock
was slow. Offerings were in excess of
the demand. Many were not sold, and
those that did change hands went at
lower prices. Export cattle were dull.
There was no demand, all the space for
this week having been taken. A11 the
space has been engaged until the middle
of October. About 6,000 head of North-
west cattle are to be'ship led and space
for about 5,000 more is said to have been
taken by' Ontario exporters.

The present lot of the ];uglith farmer
is not a happy one. A London correa•
pondent illustrates the condition of. of-'
fairs with the following cheerful para.
graph : "The agricultural news from
the southern counties of England is
simply deplorable. A friend of mine,
who has taken a farm in a home county
into his own hands, told me the other
day that he had 200 acres of (wheat
which ought to ho ready to cut, but
that fr.r weeks ho had not even walked
to look at it, as the knew that it was
rotting in the rain."
Mr. W. P. Oharlton, of llderton, re-
ports a yield, of 42 bushels of Mancheste t'
wheat from three-quarters of an acre on
his farm. Ile only sowed one bushel of
grain to the three-quarters of an acre.
