THE HOSTELRIES OF .PHIL-

$5000 WORTTI ANtiU-
ALLY TO OUT-
SIDERS.
A good-looking man, with a
black moustache, who wore a nob-
by gray suit and patent leather
shoes, .walked into the Girard
1 -louse ono afternoon and stepping
up to the counter said, with tho
air of a millionaire:
"Give mo some writing paper,'
The clerk looked at tho strang-
er keenly and handed out a sheet
- of the hotel paper and an `envel-
ope. Tho stranger asked for two
inoro sheets of paper and two
mere envelopes. The clerk gave
them to him reluctantly. Then
the man strutted off to the writ-
ing room, made himself at home
in aii easy chair and beganwriting
The man was a dead stranger to
the clerk. He wasn't a guest at
the hotel and had never boon seen
there before. After he had writ -
en his letters he 'dissappeared in
the post 'Oflice acre.:. Ninth-
street.
Upon inquiry among the lead-
ing hotels of Philadelphia, it was
learned that they give annually
$5000 worth of stationery tolout-
siders who are not w)rtI1 .two
cents towards the maintenance
of the hostelries. A prominent
hotel clerk was asked why the
hotel people were so liberal and
he said:
"Because they can't help them-
selves. A clerk doesn't always
know in a big hotel whether a
lean is a giipst or not, 'and if a
man asks for some writing paper
the clerk can't ask him his name
and then refer to the register.
•'There's no way to do but to hand
out the paper except to writing j
paper fiends, • Those are men
who hang around the hoick_ _a.u.
the time, who beg writing paper
every day. We generally refuse
then.
"I can recall one instance in
this very hotel of how • a clerk
nearly lost his position through
refusing a man writing paper.
Tho man was an advance agent
fora •theatrical lompany and a
guest of the house. IID was seedy
looking and a neve face to the
clerk.. He asked for a.. dozen
sheets of paper and a, dozen en-
velopes. The clerk wouldn't give
them to him. The advance agent
went to tho proprietor of the ho-
tel without saying a word and
raised thunder. The upshot of it
was the clerk had to make an
apology. Still the hotel lost the
advance agent's patronage. It's
ticklish business to refuse a Ivan
a sheet of paper in a hotel office."

The pool of Bethesda has been
satisfactorily imien tiflod at J ersua-

the Palestine exploration fund.
All early authorities agree in re-
presenting this pool as being
near the Church of St. Anne, but
nothing was known of the pool
in later years till sono Algerian
monks recently unearthed a largo
tank in the rock under the church
reached by a flight of 2.1 steps.
However, the p061 being invari•
ably described as having five
porches, this tank -did not quite
correspond to the Bethesda pool
until now, when lIerr Conrad
Shieck has found a twin pool side
by side with the first discovery.
These sister pools,thel•Ofor, could
easily have had a porch on each
of the four side., with n fifth or a

The miscroscope has proved that theme
diseases are contagious, and that they are
due to the presence of living parasites in
the interlining memb9•ane of the upper air
passages and eustachlan tubes. '1 he emi-

le endorse this and the authorities cannot
be disputed. T he regular method of treat-
ing these diseases has been to apply an ir-
ritant remedy weekly, and even daily, thus
keeping the delicate membrane in a con-
stant state of irration, allowing it no chan-
ce to heal, and as a natural consequence of
such treatment not one permanent cure
has ever been recorded, It is an absolute
fact that those diseased cannot be cured by
any application made oftener than once in
two weeks for the membrane must get a
chance to heal before an application is re-
peated. It is now seven years since Mr.
Nixon discovered the parasite 11 catarrh
and formulated his new treatn eat, and
since then his remedy has become a house.
