It is not hard to account for this, when we consider that it was the first in the field, and gained its popular- ity',by long years of first-olass service. It has kept up to the times by adopting all modern improvements in equipment and methods, the latest being complete PullmanVestibuledtrains running daily` between Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Minneapolis, and its route being along the banks of the Mississippi, through the finest farming country, the most populous and prosperous towns and villages, it offers to its_patrons the very best service their mcnVercan buy. A good-looking man, with a black moustache, who wore a nob- by gray suit and patent leather shoes, .walked into the Girard 1 -louse ono afternoon and stepping up to the counter said, with tho air of a millionaire: "Give mo some writing paper,' The clerk looked at tho strang- er keenly and handed out a sheet - of the hotel paper and an `envel- ope. Tho stranger asked for two inoro sheets of paper and two mere envelopes. The clerk gave them to him reluctantly. Then the man strutted off to the writ- ing room, made himself at home in aii easy chair and beganwriting The man was a dead stranger to the clerk. Upon inquiry among the lead- ing hotels of Philadelphia, it was learned that they give annually $5000 worth of stationery tolout- siders who are not w)rtI1 .two cents towards the maintenance of the hostelries. A prominent hotel clerk was asked why the hotel people were so liberal and he said: "Because they can't help them- selves. A clerk doesn't always know in a big hotel whether a lean is a giipst or not, 'and if a man asks for some writing paper the clerk can't ask him his name and then refer to the register. •'There's no way to do but to hand out the paper except to writing j paper fiends, • Those are men who hang around the hoick_ _a.u. the time, who beg writing paper every day. The clerk wouldn't give them to him. The advance agent went to tho proprietor of the ho- tel without saying a word and raised thunder. The upshot of it was the clerk had to make an apology. Still the hotel lost the advance agent's patronage. It's ticklish business to refuse a Ivan a sheet of paper in a hotel office." 71 . 4 Don't Wait Until your hair becomes .dry, thin, anal gray before giving the attention needed to preserve its beauty and vitality. '1 he emi- nent scientists, 'Tyndall, Huxley'and Bea. le endorse this and the authorities cannot be disputed. T he regular method of treat- ing these diseases has been to apply an ir- ritant remedy weekly, and even daily, thus keeping the delicate membrane in a con- stant state of irration, allowing it no chan- ce to heal, and as a natural consequence of such treatment not one permanent cure has ever been recorded, It is an absolute fact that those diseased cannot be cured by any application made oftener than once in two weeks for the membrane must get a chance to heal before an application is re- peated.
